Chassell Girls, DB-TC Boys Reign in CMC Cross Country – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet entertains Westwood – no report.
• Houghton fell to Marquette 3-1.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Baraga – no report.
• Jeffers visits Bessemer – no report.
• Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Watersmeet – no report.
• Ontonagon hosts Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.
• Hancock’s match at Ishpeming was called off after the Hematites reported some positive COVID-19 tests.

In volleyball tonight, L’Anse plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. 

The opening round of the WestPAC tournament takes place tomorrow. Houghton, Hancock, Calumet and West Iron County will compete at Houghton High School. Our coverage begins at 9:40 on KBear 102.3.

Chassell has been named the Copper Mountain Conference girls cross country team of the year. Gwen Kangas of the Panthers was named Runner of the Year. Kamryn Sohlden and Ayla Miller of the Panthers joined Kangas on the all-conference first team, along with Kaylee Cavis from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Natalie Stone from Gogebic, and Elise Besonen and Kate Borseth from Ewen-Trout Creek.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was named the CMC boys cross country team of the year. Jonah Nordine from Ewen-Trout Creek was named Runner of the Year. The all-conference first team includes John Paul Norland, Davin Hill and Cooper Stout from the Blue Bolts, Tavin Larson and Travis Asiala from Jeffers, and Kolson Kytta from Chassell.

The WestPAC cross country finals are scheduled to take place today in Negaunee.

In high school football tonight…
• Calumet plays at Hancock. Coverage begins at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.
• Houghton entertains Negaunee.
• L’Anse travels to Iron Mountain.
• Ontonagon hosts North Dickinson.

Tomorrow, Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes North Central. The Lakes were originally scheduled to host Newberry, but the change was made earlier this week. Kickoff is set for 2:00.

Hancock High School and Lake Linden-Hubbell High School will form a co-op for varsity hockey starting this season. Hancock and Lake Linden-Hubbell last had a cooperative agreement in the 2001-02 season. Since then, the Lakes have been part of the Jeffers co-op.

Hancock will also be reinstating its junior varsity program. Hannah Impola will coach the JV team, and also assist new varsity coach Scott Mikesch.

Finlandia

Allen Dehority has been named head men’s basketball coach at Finlandia University. Dehority’s resume includes several seasons as an assistant men’s coach at Rose-Hulman, and a term as head coach of the women’s team at Notre Dame of Maryland University. He has served most recently as Finlandia’s assistant women’s basketball coach, and as athletics communication manager at Northern Michigan University.

MLB

The Astros stayed alive in the American League Championship Series last night, with a 4-3 win over the Rays. Carlos Correa’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning was the game-winner. Tampa Bay still leads the series 3-2.

The Braves broke open a close game with six runs in the sixth inning, and pounded the Dodgers 10-2. Atlanta leads the series 3-1.

Both sets continue tonight.

NFL

The Lions visit the Jaguars for a 1:00 game on Sunday. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Lions running back Adrian Peterson missed yesterday’s practice because of illness. Reports say it is not COVID-19.

The Packers head south to play the Buccaneers in a 4:25 game Sunday.
