High School Football
Lake Linden Football 2014-10-18In high school football Saturday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell took a quick lead… then held off a determined North Dickinson team to take a 36-30 victory on Parents Day. The Lakes scored on the first three possessions – a 4-yard run by quarterback Arthur Lyons, a 14-yard pass by Lyons to Brendan Middleton, and a 57-yard pass by Lyons to Tyler Roose. North Dickinson responded with touchdown runs of 48 and 11 yards by Jonas Christian. The first half ended with Lake Linden leading 22-12, and the Nordics on the Lakes’ two-yard line, unable to stop the clock to set up another potential score. North Dickinson closed the gap to four points in the third quarter, when Derek Wagner scored from three yards out. Lake Linden counterpunched with a 13-yard touchdown run by Lyons, and a one-yard plunge by Nic Walli. Trailing by 18 points, the Nordics came back again. Garrett O’Neil connected with Noah Berg for a 57-yard pass-and-run touchdown, and Christian scored on an eight-yard run with just over five minutes remaining. Lake Linden was unable run out the clock, and North Dickinson had a chance for a final scoring drive to tie or win the game. They started at their own one-yard line, ran several quick, effective plays until the drive stalled when an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called on one of their players. Ultimately, the Lakes’ margin of victory came from two-point conversions. Lake Linden converted three two-point attempts for a total of six points. North Dickinson converted none. With a record of 3-5, the Nordics will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1990. The Lakes improve to 7-1, and will play at Forest Park Friday night. The Trojans rolled over Gogebic 53-14 Saturday. The winner of Friday night’s game will likely be the top-seed in the Division Eight Regional tournament.
