Copper Island Classic Opens Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

Calumet Zamboni 2014-11-28Copper Island Classic Opens Tonight
In high school hockey, the Copper Island Classic opens tonight, as Hancock skates at Calumet. The Calumet Hockey Association will unveil its new Zamboni at tonight’s game, and will honor longtime hockey supporter Paul Bracco with the Paul Lehto Service Award. The second game of the total-points series will be played tomorrow night at the Colosseum. Both games begin at 7:00. The Michigan 11-man high school football championship games will be played in Detroit today and tomorrow. Two Upper Peninsula teams are still alive in the tournament. Munising will face Muskegon Catholic Central in the Division Eight final this morning at 10:00. Ishpeming will take on Detroit-Loyola in the Division Seven final tomorrow morning at 10:00.

The Michigan Tech hockey team will try to start a new winning streak this weekend in their first-ever visit to Alabama-Huntsville. Huntsville has three wins and two ties in its last eight games, including a victory at Ferris State. Faceoffs are at 8:07 tonight and tomorrow night.

The Huskies’ women’s basketball team hosts Minnesota State tomorrow afternoon. Tip-off is at 2:00 at the SDC.

The Tech men’s basketball team plays at the Southwest Minnesota State tournament this weekend. The Huskies open against the host Mustangs tonight, and face Wayne State from Nebraska tomorrow night.

Northern’s men’s basketball team is also playing at the Southwest Minnesota State Classic this weekend. The Wildcats face Wayne State tonight, and the host Mustangs tomorrow night.

The Northern hockey team skates tonight and tomorrow night at Alaska-Fairbanks.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team entertains Lake Forest College this weekend. Faceoffs are at 7:15 tonight, and 4:00 tomorrow afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

The men’s basketball team plays at Northwood University tomorrow afternoon, and at Concordia-Ann Arbor on Sunday.

The women’s basketball team will play at Calvin College tomorrow, and will face Concordia-Ann Arbor in Grand Rapids on Sunday.

NHL – Red Wings At New Jersey
The Red Wings skate at New Jersey tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Host Bucks
The Detroit Pistons host the Bucks tonight.

In NFL action yesterday…
– The Lions’ offense woke up, and Detroit beat the Bears 34-17. Less than a week after laying an egg against the Patriots, Matthew Stafford completed 34 of 45 passes for 390 yards and two touchdowns. Calvin Johnson caught 11 of those passes. Joique Bell ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
– The Eagles shot down the Cowboys 33-10.
– The Seahawks stopped the 49ers 19-3.

The Packers host the Patriots Sunday afternoon.
