Copper Kings Claim District VB Crown – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In the high school volleyball tournament last night Calumet easily swept Ironwood 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-12) to earn the Division Three district title. The Copper Kings will face Manistique in the regional semifinals Tuesday at Escanaba.

Tonight, in Division Four…
– Jeffers will play at Chassell for the District 98 title.
– Wakefield-Marenisco will play at Ewen-Trout Creek for the District 97 crown.

In the high school football tournament tomorrow…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell will play for the Division Eight district title at Ishpeming. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.
– Calumet will host Menominee for the Division Six district crown. Pregame coverage will start at 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Calumet school officials are asking for help to remove snow at Agassiz Field. Volunteers can meet this afternoon at 1:00 to clear out the walkways and bleachers. Bring shovels. Many hands make light work.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team entertains Aurora University tonight at 7:15 and tomorrow at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena. The women’s hockey team is off this weekend.

Both Finlandia basketball teams open their seasons tomorrow at the University of Dubuque.

The Lions football team hosts Albion College tomorrow at McAfee Field. The start time has been moved up to noon.

Finlandia had four players selected to the All-American Collegiate Athletic Association team for men’s soccer. Akwasi Kwarteng was named to the first team. Chelan Gonzalez, Noah Raisanen and Zach Wichman. were placed on the second team.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Northern Michigan University this afternoon. 

The Huskies volleyball team hosts Ferris State University this evening at 5:00.

The Tech football team visits Wayne State University tomorrow.

Both Tech basketball teams begin their seasons tomorrow. The women play at Lewis University, and the men at McKendree University.

The Northern Michigan University football squad hosts Saginaw Valley State University tomorrow afternoon.

WCHA

The Michigan Tech hockey team welcomes Minnesota State University tonight at 7:07 and tomorrow at 6:07.

The NMU hockey team hosts Saint Cloud State University tonight and tomorrow.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines visit the Mosinee Papermakers for games tonight and tomorrow.

The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Marquette Mutineers tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Boston Bruins tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have obtained former first round draft choice Robby Fabbri from the Saint Louis Blues. Fabri is a 23-year-old forward, and has one goal in nine games this season. The Blues get forward Jacob de la Rose in exchange. Detroit has also sent defenseman Joe Hicketts to Grand Rapids.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Indiana Pacers tonight.

Blake Griffin has been cleared to resume basketball activities. He’s been dealing with a sore knee and a sore hamstring. It’s not certain when he’ll be ready to return to the lineup.

MLB

Matthew Boyd has been named Tiger of the Year by the Detroit Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Oakland Raiders edged the Los Angeles Chargers 26-24. 

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions visit the Chicago Bears for a 1:00 game. Pregame coverage begins at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Green Bay Packers host the Carolina Panthers in a 4:25 contest.
