The Houghton hockey team will face Flint Powers Catholic in the state semifinals this afternoon at 1:30 in Plymouth. Our pre-game coverage will begin just after 1:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Bloomfield Hills will meet Riverview in the other semifinal. If the Gremlins win, the championship game will be played Saturday afternoon at 2:00.

In the Regional finals of the girls’ high school basketball tournament last night…
– In Class B, Houghton’s season ended with a 56-47 loss to Manistee.
– In Class C, Calumet advanced to the quarterfinals with a 34-25 victory over Gwinn. The Copper Kings will face Tawas City Tuesday at 7:00 at Petoskey.

In boys’ high school basketball tournament action tonight…
– In Class D at Ontonagon, Lake Linden-Hubbell and Jeffers will play for the District title at 7:00. Our pregame coverage begins around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear 102.com.

 

MTU Tournament Weekend
MTU Huskies LogoThe MTU women’s basketball team will host the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament this weekend. The top-seeded Huskies will face Cedarville this evening at 5:00. In today’s other games, Drury will take on Wayne State at noon… Wisconsin-Parkside will face Lewis at 2:30… and Southern Indiana meets Ashland at 7:30. The semifinal matches will take place tomorrow at 5:00 and 7:30. The final will tip off Monday at 7:00.

The Tech men’s basketball team will open the Midwest Regional tournament tomorrow afternoon against Indianapolis at Bellarmine University in Louisville. The Huskies are seeded sixth.

The second-seeded MTU hockey team opens the WCHA tournament tonight against seventh-seed Alabama-Huntsville. Game two of the best-of-three series will take place tomorrow night, with the third game on Sunday, if needed. Face-off for each game is at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.

Michigan Tech’s Tanner Kero was named the WCHA Player of the Year yesterday. The Hancock native led the conference in points. Goaltender Jamie Phillips joined Kero on the First Team while forwards Alex Petan and Malcolm Gould earned All-WCHA Second Team honors. Representing the Huskies on the Third Team were defenseman Shane Hanna and forward Blake Pietila. Eleven Huskies were named to the WCHA All-Academic Team. Finlandia Soccer Adds Recruits
The Finlandia men’s soccer team has added seven new players for next season. Two are from Wisconsin, with one each from Michigan, California, Texas, Pennsylvania and Illinois. Learn about them here.

NHL – Red Wings Lose Columbus
Justin Abdelkader gave Detroit an early lead, but the Red Wings fell to the Blue Jackets 3-1 last evening. Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots, but took the loss. The Wings skate at Philadelphia tomorrow afternoon. Face-off is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons at Portland
The Detroit Pistons play at Portland tonight. Tip-off is at 10:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Justin Verlander cruised through three scoreless innings, but a Detroit Tigers split squad lost to the Phillies 6-5 yesterday. All six Houston runs came off closer Joe Nathan. Bruce Rondon pitched a scoreless inning his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. His third pitch hit 100 miles per hour. A second Tigers fell to the Astros 4-3 in 10 inning yesterday. Starter Drew Verhagen gave up a run over three innings. The Tigers face the Braves this afternoon. Shane Greene will make his second start of the spring.

The Brewers defeated the Rockies 5-3. Wily Peralta threw three scoreless innings, and Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run double. The Brewers face the Mariners this afternoon.
