High School

The proposed completion of three fall high school sports tournaments has been delayed.

Last week, the Michigan High School Athletic Association decided to allow the football, volleyball and Lower Peninsula girls swimming tournaments to resume early next month. They were interrupted when the state suspended most face-to-face high school activities in November. The MHSAA also said that resumption of activities would depend on implementation of a pilot program in which participants would be given rapid-result COVID-19 antigen tests.

Because of a delay in setting up the testing procedure and educating school officials as to how it works, the MHSAA has ordered that practices stop immediately. Instructional webinars will be provided December 28th and 29th. The first tests will be administered December 30th. Practices involving those who clear the tests can resume after that.

Because of the delay, the MHSAA is reviewing the the schedule for completing the playoffs. The volleyball tournament, which includes the Calumet High School team, was set to resume January 5th. The football playoffs were scheduled to pick up January 2nd.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City has appointed some new basketball coaches. Jake Stevens will take over the boys varsity team. He’s a 2003 Dollar Bay graduate, and had been serving as JV coach. Stevens replaces Jesse Kentala, who recently became the principal at Hancock Middle School. Brendan LeClaire will succeed Stevens as JV coach. LeClaire is a 2019 Dollar Bay graduate, and helped lead the Blue Bolts to two state tournament semifinals berths. Gabe Olson has been appointed girls JV coach.
