Dean Kangas State Farm Claims Twilight Tourney Title – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers fell to the Seattle Mariners 7-2 yesterday. Spencer Turnbull gave up three runs over five innings, and took the loss. He struck out eight. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer for Detroit.

The Tigers open a series at Tampa Bay tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Charlie Morton. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will open a set against the Nationals in Washington tonight. Adrian Houser will start against Patrick Corbin.

Twilight League

Dean Kangas State Farm claimed the Copper Country Twilight Baseball League tournament title last night, with a 4-3 victory over REL-Mohawk Technology at the Hancock Driving Park. All of the scoring came in the first inning, with Brian Halonen’s bases-loaded double plating three for REL in the top of the frame. State Farm responded with a two-run triple by Dave Wesa, who also scored on a throwing error. Jason Koski then doubled, and was singled home by Brandon Teichman for what turned out to be the winning run. After that, Brady Turner allowed only two more hits for Dean Kangas. He struck out nine. Sam Kariniemi gave up only two more hits for REL, and struck out four. State Farm’s Scott Pietila was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player.

Great Deer Chase

The Aspirus Great Deer Chase mountain bike races will be held tomorrow at the Swedetown Trails. 15 and 30-mile races will begin at 11:00. Online sign up continues here. Onsite registration and bib pickup will take place at Cross Country Sports in Calumet this evening between 6:30 and 8:00, and tomorrow morning between 8:00 and 10:00.

Kids races will begin at 9:00 tomorrow, and include a four-mile race for those ages 14 and under, a two-mile event for those ages 10 and under, and a 40-yard untimed event for youngsters. Online sign-up is also available for those events, with onsite registration open at Cross Country Sports this evening between 6:30 and 8:00, and tomorrow morning between 7:30 and 8:30.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers suffered a 26-13 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens last night. Aaron Rodgers did not play because of some muscle tightness in his back. Tim Boyle took most of the snaps at quarterback, completing 12 of 21 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. DeShone Kizer completed five of 10 throws for 70 yards.

The Detroit Lions’ next exhibition game is tomorrow at Houston. Kickoff is at 8:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

High School

The 17th annual Lakes Linebackers Golf Outing will be held tomorrow at the Calumet Golf Club. It’s a nine-hole, two-person scramble, with a shotgun start at 1:00. The $40.00 cost includes dinner. The dinner is also open to the public for $10.00. For details, or to sign up, call 370-1329. Proceeds will benefit the Lake Linden-Hubbell football program.
