Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team has added a new recruit. Jayde Pederson is the career goals leader for Waseca High School in Minnesota.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers will continue to pay all their minor league players – for now. With no minor league baseball to be played this summer, teams had agreed to provide a $400 per week stipend for their players through the end of May. Some teams, including the Milwaukee Brewers, have released some players, while continuing to pay those remaining. The Oakland Athletics yesterday furloughed all their minor-leaguers.

Negotiations continue on the shape and duration of the major league baseball season. After rejecting the owners’ proposal for a regular season of around 80 games, and a sliding pay scale that would cost higher-paid stars a larger percentage of their salaries than lower-paid players, the players countered with a plan for a 114-game regular season, with an expanded playoff. Yesterday, owners presented their latest proposal, dropping the sliding scale, but calling for a regular season of only around 50 games, with the potential for an expanded playoff.

NHL

National Hockey League players will be tested each day for COVID-19 once the season begins. Commissioner Gary Bettman says that could require as many as 35,000 tests by the time the Stanley Cup is awarded. The top 24 teams in the league will finish the season in an expanded playoff. Dates for resumption of practices and the beginning of play have not yet been determined.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have signed two more of this year’s draftees. Guard Simon Stepaniak out of Indiana was the 209th choice overall. Safety Vernon Scott from Texas Christian University was the 236th overall pick.
