Dreamland One Wins Horseshoe Crown

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 9-3 to the Chicago Cubs last night. Casey Mize gave up two runs in the second inning, and left as the Cubs scored four more in the fourth. Javier Báez hit two home runs for Chicago. Christin Stewart homered for Detroit.

The Tigers host the Cubs again tonight. Spencer Turnbull will start against Tyler Chatwood. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Carson Fulmer’s brief adventure in Detroit has ended. The Tigers claimed the reliever off waivers from the White Sox a month ago. He was designated for assignment last week when Buck Farmer returned from the injured list. Yesterday, he was claimed by the Pirates off waivers.

The Milwaukee Brewers snapped their four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last evening. Home runs by Justin Smoak and Omar Narváez helped the Crew build an early 4-0 lead. Brett Anderson tossed five scoreless innings, then gave up a solo home run in the sixth, and left the game after surrendering another solo home run to lead off the seventh.

The Brewers entertain the Reds again this evening. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Luis Castillo.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings have signed Robby Fabbri to a two-year contract extension. The deal is reported to be worth nearly $6 million. Detroit acquired Fabbri last November in exchange for Jacob de la Rose. He was a restricted free agent.

In NHL second-round playoff action…
• In the Eastern Conference last night, the Islanders blanked the Flyers 4-0. New York takes a 1-0 lead in that series. The Bruins face the Lightning tonight. Boston is up 1-0 in that set.
• In the Western Conference last night, the Stars dumped the Avalanche 5-2. Dallas leads that series 2-0. Tonight, the Canucks take on the Golden Knights. Vegas leads that set 1-0.

NBA

In the opening round of the NBA playoffs…

In the Eastern Conference yesterday…
• The Heat melted the Pacers 99-87. Miami sweeps that series 4-0.
• The Bucks outscored the Magic 121-106. Milwaukee leads that series 3-1.

In the Western Conference yesterday…
• The Thunder got past the Rockets 117-114. That series is tied 2-2.
• The Lakers cruised past the Trail Blazers 135-115. L-A leads that set 3-1.

Today…
• The Jazz face the Nuggets. Utah is up 3-1 in that series.
• The Mavericks play the Clippers. That series is tied 2-2.

Horseshoes

Dreamland One claimed the 2020 Copper Country Horseshoe League crown last night, with a 6-3 victory over L and L. Calumet One defeated Harter’s Party Store 7-2 in the consolation match.

Copper Country Oldtimers

The Copper Country Oldtimers Hockey League has presented its 2020 Hockey is Life Scholarship Award to former Houghton High School standout Jiseung Choi. The $500 award will help with expenses as he studies mechanical engineering at Saginaw Valley State University.

The scholarship is funded by the Oldtimers’ annual spring tournament, which had to be canceled this year. Next year’s event is set for March 18th through 21st.
