Erkkila Scores Five as Calumet Hockey Slams Esky – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Houghton blanked Jeffers 8-0.
– Calumet routed Escanaba 9-1. Sam Erkkila scored a hat trick in the first period, and finished with five goals. Brent Loukus added two, and Alex Mattila and Scott Loukus added one each. Nick Voelker got the win in net, as the Copper Kings outshot the Eskymos 43-14.
– The Hancock at Kingsford match that had been delayed from Monday night to last night was postponed again, and will be played tomorrow night.

In boys basketball last night…
– Calumet defeated West Iron County 58-46 – the first conference loss of the season for the Wykons. West Iron still leads the WestPAC with a 6-1 conference mark. Calumet is at 5-1. The Copper Kings face Houghton and Hancock next week, while the Wykons have one final conference game Friday against Hancock.
– Chassell defeated Baraga 62-49.
– Ontonagon got past L’Anse 56-51.
– The Houghton game against Lake Linden-Hubbell was postponed to tomorrow night.
– The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at Hancock game was postponed, and will be played tonight.
– The Ewen-Trout Creek game at Watersmeet was canceled, and will not be made up.

On the boys schedule tonight…
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Hancock to make up last night’s missed game.
– Ewen-Trout Creek will play at Chassell. That game was added to the schedule yesterday to make up for Ewen-Trout Creek not playing Watersmeet yesterday, and Chassell missing a game against Stephenson because of a schedule foul-up earlier in the season. The JV contest will start at 6:15, with the varsity around 7:45.

On the girls schedule tonight…
– Houghton entertains Westwood, to make up a snowout from January 12th.
– Baraga plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, to make up a game that was snowed out on December 5th, and again on January 22nd.

Finlandia
Finlandia University women’s hockey goaltender Annah Smiddy has been named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week. Smiddy stopped 55 shots and allowed just one goal as the Lions closed their season with a two-game sweep of Aurora University last weekend.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell behind 2-0 in the first period, and lost 3-2 to the Nashville Predators last night. Andreas Athanasiou and Tomáš Tatar scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard took the loss in net with 26 saves. The Wings host the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

As expected, Detroit called former Northern Michigan University goalie Jared Coreau up from Grand Rapids yesterday to fill the spot vacated when they traded Petr Mrazek to the Philadelphia Flyers.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons return from the NBA All-Star break Friday night, when they host the Boston Celtics. Tip-off will take place at 7:00 on 99.3 the Lift.

Fishing
There are two ice fishing tournaments on Saturday. The Chassell VFW tournament has an adult division that runs from 7:00 until 7:00, and a youth division that’s open from 7:00 until 1:00. Sign up this week at the Chassell VFW during regular hours, or Saturday morning between 7:00 and 10:00. The KBIC tourney will run from 6:00 until 4:00. Sign up Friday evening between 5:00 and 9:00 at the Press Box at the Casino.

Our high school hockey coverage continues tomorrow night, when Houghton skates at Escanaba. The pregame show will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Full coverage of the local hockey and Class C girls and boys basketball tournaments begins Monday.

Our Finlandia University athletics coverage continues this weekend at the American Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament. Our broadcast of the top-seeded Lions’ semifinal game against Pine Manor will begin at 7:40 Saturday evening.
