Finlandia Men, Women Fall – Monday Sports Wrap

HS GBB Clip ArtIn the girls’ high school basketball Friday night…
– Houghton defeated West Iron County 59-43. Sloan Zenner scored 20 for the Gremlins.
– Calumet pounded Jeffers 67-33.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Chassell 46-29.
– Dollar Bay overcame a nine-point deficit to edge Ontonagon 47-44.
– L’Anse got past Baraga 59-54. The Purple Hornets built a 10-point halftime lead, but the Vikings closed the gap, and tied it when Gaby Mayo sank a jumper off an inbound pass as the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation. Mayo led all scorers with 34 points. Abby Hendrickson scored 18 for L’Anse, and Bailey Froberg added 15.

In boys’ play Friday night… Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Bessemer 78-65.

In high school hockey…
– Houghton doubled up Escanaba 6-3 Friday night. Spencer Donnelly scored twice for the Gremlins.
– L’Anse lost to Cheboygan 10-2 at the Cheboygan Holiday Showcase Friday night. The Hornets defeated the Kalamazoo Eagles 10-4 on Saturday.

MTU Huskies LogoMTU Hoops Split
The undefeated, 20th-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team rode a strong second half to a 77-69 victory over Minot State Saturday. All five of the Huskies’ starters reached double figures in scoring, led by Brenna Heise with 22 points.

The Tech men’s basketball team lost 69-62 at Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon. Ben Stelzer led the Huskies with 32 points.

Finlandia Men Split, Women Drop Two
The Finlandia men’s team defeated Clarke University 90-79 Saturday afternoon. Five Lions scored in double figures, led by Eric Lori with 18. Finlandia lost to Lake Superior State 91-63 yesterday afternoon. Schwartzen Jarmond came off the bench to score 18 for the Lions.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team built a nine-point halftime lead at Alma College on Saturday, but the Scots came back to beat the Lions 55-50. Houghton’s Kelsie Richards led the Lions with 12 points. L’Anse’s Valerie Rajala added 10. Yesterday, the Lions built a 10-point halftime lead, but couldn’t hold it, and lost at Adrian College 87-76. The Bulldogs scored 55 points in the second half to complete the comeback. Marissa Burke led Finlandia with 26 points.

In Great Lakes Hockey League play…
– The Portage Lake Pioneers edged Eagle River 7-6 in overtime Friday night. Connor Hannon scored the game-winner – his first goal in his first game as a Pioneer. The Falcons edged the Pioneers 5-4 on Saturday.
– Logan Rastello scored twice, as the Calumet Wolverines lost 7-6 at Fox Cities Friday night. On Saturday, the Wolverines couldn’t hold a 3-1 first period lead, and lost at Depere 4-3. Mike Babcock had a goal and an assist.

NHL – Red Wings Suffer Another Shootout Loss
The Red Wings suffered another shootout loss yesterday, 2-1 to the Avalanche. Pavel Datsyuk scored for Detroit, and Petr Mrazek stopped 22 shots. The Wings have lost six in a row… four in shootouts… and host the Sabres tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Lose to Nets
The Pistons’ late rally fell short, and they lost to the Nets 110-105 last night. Detroit trailed by 15 with five-and-a-half minutes to go… but closed to within a point when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope sank a three-pointer with nine seconds to go. Brooklyn sank four free throws to ice the game. Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 20 points. Andre Drummond added 18, and pulled down 20 rebounds. The Pistons are off until Friday, when they host the Pacers.

NFL – Lions Get Past Bears; Packers Win Bay Battle
In the NFL yesterday, the Lions overcame mistakes and sloppy play to pull out a 20-14 victory over the Bears. Matthew Stafford threw two red zone interceptions in the first half. Reggie Bush ran for a touchdown early, and Joique Bell scored the game-winner in the fourth quarter.

The Packers shut down Tampa Bay 20-3 yesterday. Aaron Rodgers threw for 318 yards and a touchdown, despite struggling with a calf injury he suffered early in the game. The win locks in a playoff berth for Green Bay.

The Lions and Packers will meet next Sunday. Rodgers says his calf problem will be resolved by then. The winner will claim the NFC North Division title. The loser will open the playoffs as a wild card selection. Sunday’s game has been moved to a 4:25 start time. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
