Finlandia Names New Football OC – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey tonight…

– Calumet entertains Kingsford in a game that was weathered out on December 15th.

Jeffers forward Brendan Middleton has been named the LTU Michigan North Region High School Hockey Player of the Week. Calumet defenseman Trevor Johnson and Houghton forward Jacob Kruse received honorable mention votes. The statewide voting is coordinated by the coaching staff at Lawrence Tech. KBear 102.3 is a member of the voting panel.

In girls high school basketball last night, Jeffers defeated Dollar Bay 66-34.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams entertain Grand Valley State tonight. The women’s contest starts at 5:30, and the men’s game at 7:30.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University football team has a new offensive coordinator. Robert Boss has spent the past eight years on the coaching staff at Northern Michigan University, where he also earned four varsity letters as a lineman. He replaces Dan Mettlach, who recently left the Lions to join the coaching staff at Michigan Tech.

Mrazek

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Petr Mrazek stopped 24 shots, and took the loss for Detroit. The NHL All-Star Game will be played Sunday. The Wings return to action Tuesday at home against the New Jersey Devils. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons welcome the Miami Heat Saturday night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Gose

MLB
Detroit Tigers center field candidate Anthony Gose has cleared waivers, and has been assigned to Toledo. Gose played in 140 games for Detroit in 2015, but struggled so badly last season that he was eventually demoted to Double-A. Another potential candidate for the Detroit center field job is off the table. Former Tiger Austin Jackson signed a minor-league deal with the Cleveland Indians after missing much of last season with a knee injury.
