FinnU Baseball, Softball Teams Earn DH Splits – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

Matthew Boyd struck out 13 batters, as the Detroit Tigers edged the New York Yankees 2-1 yesterday. Boyd gave up a run on five hits before leaving in the seventh inning with the score tied. Gordon Beckham’s home run in the top of the eighth inning was the game-winner, and one of only three Detroit hits. Shane Greene earned his fourth save.

The Tigers play their home opener against the Kansas City Royals this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start against Jakob Junis. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ hot start continued with a 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Freddy Peralta gave up two hits and struck out 11 over eight innings. Alex Wilson got the save. Manny Piña singled home the game’s only run in the second inning.

The Brewers have today off, and will host the Chicago Cubs tomorrow night. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against José Quintana.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will visit the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 108-89 to the Indiana Pacers last night. Blake Griffin missed his third straight game with a sore knee. Andre Drummond led Detroit with 28 points and 19 rebounds. The Pistons visit the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Griffin’s knee is said to be improving. He was upgraded to “questionable” status before last night’s game, and could be available tomorrow.

Despite the loss, the Pistons remain in sixth place in the NBA Eastern Conference standings, but are now just a half-game ahead of the Brooklyn Nets and the Orlando Magic, and a game ahead of the Miami Heat.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University baseball team split its doubleheader at Wisconsin-Superior yesterday, dropping the opener 10-0, and then winning the second contest 13-6. Patrick Coles had three hits, scored three runs and drove in four runs in the nightcap.

The Lions softball team swept its twin bill at Ripon College yesterday, taking the first game 11-8, and the second 7-0. The Lions took control of the opener with an eight-run sixth inning. Harlie Caster had three hits. Denia Bent threw the shutout in the nightcap, and Caster had three more hits.

A softball doubleheader scheduled for today at Bemidji State University has been canceled.

High School

The L’Anse High School softball team will hold a fundraiser this evening. Buy a hamburger and fries at the L’Anse American Legion post for $8.00 between 4:00 and 7:00. Proceeds will help purchase new uniforms.

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines will wrap up their seasons in the Gibson Cup series this weekend. Game one will be tomorrow at 7:30 at the Colosseum. Game two will be played Saturday at 7:30 at the Dee. Game three, if needed, will be played Sunday at 6:30 at the Colosseum. Hear all the games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
