High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell swept its doubleheader against Hancock, winning the first game 8-6, and the nightcap 19-0.
– L’Anse won both ends of its doubleheader against Baraga, 3-1 and 10-7.

In high school baseball, Houghton entertains Hancock this afternoon.

In high school track today…
– Houghton, Calumet, L’Anse will compete at the Ontonagon Invitational.
– Hancock, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Chassell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse, Jeffers, and Baraga will meet at the Lakes Invitational at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team opened the City University of New York Athletic Conference tournament with a 4-3 victory over Lehman College yesterday. Joey Krug went the distance to get the win, walking eight batters, but allowing just three hits. Josh Gregory had two hits, and scored two runs. The Lions then fell to John Jay College 11-7. Ben Loya had two hits, and scored twice. The Bloodhounds broke open a close game with five runs in the seventh inning. Finlandia will face Baruch College in an elimination game today at noon.

Finlandia’s Aaron Froelich and  Joey Krug have been named to the City University of New York Athletic Conference All Star Team.

Rain has pushed back the start of the American Collegiate Athletic Conference softball tournament in Canton, New York. Instead of opening play today, the Finlandia University softball team will face the fourth-seeded and winless SUNY-Delhi Broncos tomorrow morning at 10:00. Maine-Presque Isle and host SUNY Canton will play at noon. If the Lions win their first game, they’ll take on the winner of the second game at 4:00. If they lose their first game, they’ll face the loser of the second contest at 2:00 in an elimination game in the double-elimination tournament. The event will conclude Sunday.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost a 10-6 slugfest to the Kansas City Royals yesterday afternoon. Starter Mike Fiers struggled through four innings, and gave up five runs. Chad Bell gave up five more over the next two innings. Detroit tried to keep pace, but couldn’t – Nicholas Castellanos had three hits, including a home run, and Leonys Martin had three hits.

The Tigers continue that series in Kansas City this evening. Francisco Liriano will pitch against Ian Kennedy. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera left yesterday’s game with a strained hamstring. It was Cabrera’s first game after missing several because of a biceps spasm. He’l be evaluated today, and could be headed to the disabled list. Designated hitter Victor Martinez missed yesterday’s game because of a swollen ankle. He’s considered day-to-day.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. Junior Guerra will pitch against Nick Kingham.

Milwaukee has placed starting pitcher Zach Davies on the 10-day disabled list because of inflammation in a rotator cuff. Because of a couple of off days, he’s expected to miss only one start.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night…
– Pittsburgh defeated Washington 3-1. That series is tied 2-2.
– Nashville edged Winnipeg 2-1. That set is tied 2-2.

Tonight…
– Tampa Bay skates at Boston. The Lightning lead that series 2-1.
– San Jose plays at Las Vegas. That series is tied 2-2.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night…
– Cleveland outscored Toronto 128-110. The Cavaliers lead that series 2-0.
– Boston got past Philadelphia 108-103. The Celtics lead that set 2-0.

Tonight…
– Golden State plays at New Orleans. The Warriors lead that series 2-0.
– Houston tips off at Utah. That series is tied 1-1.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have traded defensive tackle Akeem Spence to the Miami Dolphins. In exchange, Detroit gets one of Miami’s late-round draft picks in 2019.

Little League
Keweenaw Little League will hold its spring clean-up day tomorrow, beginning at 10:00 at all fields. All families involved are encouraged to take part.
