FinnU Football Opens with Loss – Sunday Sports Wrap

College Football

Finlandia University dropped its football season opener 52-7 to Benedictine University Saturday. The Eagles opened the scoring with a field goal. The Lions responded with their only touchdown of the game, when Hunter Miles connected with Raiden Toldness for an 85-yard catch and run. The Finlandia offense would produce only 57 more yards of offense through the rest of the game, as Benedictine reeled off seven unanswered touchdowns.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Buena Vista Saturday. Finlandia will entertain Lakeland this afternoon at 3.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team and Buena Vista battled to a 1-1 tie Saturday. The Lions will host Lakeland today at 1. Because of Tigers baseball on 99.3 The Lift, hear the Finlandia game on KBear 102.3.

The Michigan Tech soccer team entertains Bemidji State today at noon.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team swept its matches at the Hampton Inn Invitational at Kenosha Saturday, defeating Illinois-Springfield 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) and Minnesota-Crookston 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-18).

The Finlandia volleyball team wrapped up play at the Wisconsin Blast Saturday with 3-0 losses to Wisconsin-Whitewater and Loras.

MLB

The Tigers lost to the Royals 12-2 Saturday. Michael Pineda was hit hard in his return from the injured list, giving up five runs over four innings. Jason Foley surrendered a grand slam in the fifth. Tucker Barnhardt homered for Detroit – his first of the year.

The Tigers entertain the Royals again this afternoon. Matt Manning will start against Max Castillo. Coverage begins at 1:20 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit placed Miguel Cabrera on the injured list with a left bicep strain. First baseman Josh Lester has been called up from the Mud Hens to fill in.

The Brewers scored two runs in the top of the 10th, and got past the Diamondbacks 8-6 Saturday. Rowdy Tellez’ homer in the ninth forced the extra frame. Tyrone Taylor’s second round-tripper of the game was the game-winner.

The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks again today. Jason Alexander will start against Zac Gallen.
