FinnU Men Earn First Win of Season – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has announced its plans for the basketball finals. Because the boys and girls tournaments begin and end in the same weeks this year, additional capacity is needed. For both boys and girls, semifinals for Divisions One and Three will be played at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. Semifinals for Divisions Two and Four will be played at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. Girls semis will take place on Wednesday, April 7th. Boys semis will be played Thursday, April 8th. All of the championship games will take place at the Breslin Center, with the girls games on Friday, April 9th, and the boys games on Saturday, April 10th. Under current COVID-19 guidelines, capacity at both arenas for players, staff and fans is set at 750.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team earned its first win of the season last night, outscoring Gogebic Community College 94-87. Dylan Underwood paced the Lions with 31 points.

College Hockey

No players from Michigan three Upper Peninsula schools were named as Western Collegiate Hockey Association first team all stars, but Yooper skaters are well-represented on the second and third teams. Second squad members include Colin Swoyer from Michigan Tech, Joseph Nardi from Northern Michigan, and Ashton Calder and Mareks Mitens from Lake Superior State. The third team includes Trenton Bliss of the Huskies, along with André Ghantous of the Wildcats, and Pete Veillette of the Lakers.

Arvid Caderoth of the Huskies and Rico DiMatteo of the Wildcats were included on the All-Rookie team.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team has been picked to finish seventh in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season. In their pre-season poll, coaches picked Grand Valley State to win the conference title. This season’s soccer schedule was moved from fall to spring because of COVID-19 concerns.

MTU

Michigan Tech’s Suzanne Sanregret has been named an NCAA Division II Athletics Director of the Year. She is one of four across the nation honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Charlotte Hornets this evening.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have been awarded three compensatory picks in the upcoming NFL Draft. The extra selections will be inserted at the ends of the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds. The compensatory picks are granted after a team loses free agents under certain circumstances. The Detroit Lions received no compensatory picks for this year’s draft.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 6-4 to the Philadelphia Phillies in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Isaac Paredes and Robbie Grossman homered. Matthew Boyd gave up a run over three innings. Buck Farmer struggled again, and was charged with four runs in less than an inning of work.

The Tigers play the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon. Michael Fulmer is scheduled to start.

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Oakland Athletics 9-1 yesterday. Starter Brett Anderson gave up a run over two innings, but relievers Josh Hader and Miguel Sánchez were each charged with three runs. Travis Shaw homered.

The Brewers will face the Kansas City Royals this afternoon. Josh Lindblom will open for the Crew.
