Finlandia
A late comeback by the Finlandia University football team fell short, as the Lions lost to Lawrence University 27-22 yesterday. Lawrence broke open a close first half with two touchdowns in the final four minutes. FinnU’s comeback began when quarterback De’Llontae Johnson passed to Joshua Eve for a touchdown in the third period. After the Vikings added a score midway through the fourth quarter, Johnson connected with former Baraga standout Dillion Hueckstaedt on a 29-yard touchdown play. Hueckstaedt also led the defense with 13 tackles. The Lions closed the gap to three points with Justin Woolever’s short scoring run. They forced a Lawrence punt, but were backed up against their own goal line. Their final drive ended when they were called for an offensive penalty in their endzone, which resulted in a safety.

The Finlandia University volleyball team swept its final two matches at the Northland College tournament in Ashland yesterday, defeating Rockford University 3-2, and then edging the host Lumberjills 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24) in an incredibly close match. The Lions went 3-1 at the tourney.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team fell behind early, and lost to St. Mary’s 3-1 yesterday. Osvaldo Cruz scored the Lions’ only goal, off a pass from Edward Caballero. The Lions women’s soccer team lost 10-0 at St. Mary’s yesterday. Finlandia was outshot 26-1. Both Finlandia teams will face Martin Luther College today.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team wrapped up the Keweenaw Classic with a 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 20-25) loss to seventh-ranked Minnesota-Duluth yesterday. The Huskies went 3-1 at their own tournament.

The MTU soccer team lost 1-0 to Bemidji State last evening. The Huskies will host Minnesota-Duluth tomorrow at noon.

The Tech football team couldn’t hold a big lead, and lost 31-27 at Hillsdale yesterday. The Huskies led 31-10 going into the fourth quarter, powered by two John Williams touchdown runs, and two Evan Gornick field goals. The Chargers rallied with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, scoring the game-winner with 1:09 remaining.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team dropped its season-opener at Angelo State 48-20 last night.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ late rally fell short, as they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 yesterday. Miguel Cabrera’s two-run homer in the first inning had given Detroit an early lead. The Jays built a 5-2 advantage against starter Chad Bell and five Detroit relievers. The Tigers scored two in the ninth on a double by Nicholas Castellanos, but Castellanos was stranded at third base when Andrew Romine struck out.

The Tigers conclude that series at Toronto this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will start against J.A. Happ. Because of Detroit Lions coverage on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage of the Tigers game will begin at 12:40 on KBear 102.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored eight times in the third inning, and routed the Chicago Cubs 15-2 yesterday. Hernán Pérez homered and drove in five runs. Chase Anderson gave up one hit over five inning, and drove in two runs.

The Brewers face the Cubs in Chicago again this afternoon. Zach Davies will start against Kyle Hendricks.

The Cardinals also won, so they and the Brewers both trail the Cubs by three games in the National League Central Division race.

The news was not all good for Milwaukee yesterday. An MRI revealed that starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson has a partially torn labrum and a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder. His season is over, and he could face surgery. The injury occurred when he slid head-first into first base during Friday night’s game.

NFL
The Detroit Lions begin their NFL season at home this afternoon against the Arizona Cardinals. Kickoff is at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers start their season with a 4:25 game against the Seattle Seahawks today.
