High School
In high school volleyball last night, Houghton blanked West Iron County 3-0.

Tonight…
– Hancock plays at Chassell.

– Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Bessemer.

In cross country, local teams compete at the Dollar Bay Invitational on the Chassell Trails this afternoon.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University soccer teams fell to Mount Marty University in Yankton, South Dakota, yesterday. The men’s team lost 3-1, and the women were shut out 7-0.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ late comeback fell short, as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Oakland Athletics yesterday. Anibal Sanchez turned in his second straight effective start, giving up a run over six innings, and striking out eight. Oakland added two in the seventh off Daniel Stumpf. Detroit scored twice on Andrew Romine’s single in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Tigers entertain the Minnesota Twins tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Adalberto Mejia. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Adam Frazier’s two-run homer off Cory Knebel in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Jesús Aguilar and Domingo Santana homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers open a critical four-game home set against the Chicago Cubs tonight. Zach Davies will start against Jake Arrieta.

The Cubs also lost last night, and still lead Milwaukee by three and a half games in the National League Central Division.

NFL
In tonight’s NFL game, the Rams visit the 49ers. Please have your picks in The Wolf Pro Football Challenge turned in by noon today at one of our sponsors.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings suffered a 6-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in preseason play last night. Gustav Nyquist’ second goal of the game with two minutes remaining in regulation forced overtime. Justin Schultz scored the game-winner off Thomas McCollum 27 seconds into the extra period. The Wings skate at Chicago tonight. We’ll broadcast the Detroit’s regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.
