FinnU Softball Splits at Cobber Classic – Thursday Sports Wrap

Finlandia

The Finlandia University softball team earned a split on the opening day of the Cobber Classic yesterday. The Lions opened with a 16-0 loss to Bemidji State, then blanked Concordia-Moorhead 3-0. Denia Bent threw the five-hitter to earn the win. The Lions will face Concordia-Moorhead again this morning at 11:00, and then play Bethany Lutheran at 1:00 at the West Saint Paul Sports Dome.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Saint Louis Blues this evening. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have signed goalie Jimmy Howard to a one-year contract extension. He’ll make four-million dollars, with the potential for bonuses if the club makes the playoffs. Next season will be Howard’s 14th in Detroit.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Phoenix Suns tonight.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers downed the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Spencer Turnbull tossed five scoreless innings, and gave up just three hits. Josh Harrison homered. The Tigers will face the Houston Astros this afternoon. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift. Opening day is a week from today.

Detroit starting pitcher Michael Fulmer has confirmed that he will undergo ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery in his pitching elbow. The procedure, commonly known as “Tommy John” surgery, will keep him on the sideline for all of this season, and potentially part of next season.

The Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the San Diego Padres 10-7 in Cactus League action yesterday. Brandon Woodruff pitched into the sixth inning, and gave up three runs. Marcus Thames, Ben Gamel and Manny Piña homered. The Brewers will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers this afternoon.

The Brewers have released veteran starter Josh Tomlin. Tomlin had been signed to a minor league contract, and was told there was no room for him in the starting rotation. The release gives him a chance to talk to other teams. He could return to the Brewers under a minor-league deal if he doesn’t find anything better.
