High School

At the boys National Invitational Hockey Tournament last evening…
• The Michigan Juniors fell to North Dakota 4-1. Calumet’s Tom Erkilla and Jackson Rilei play on that team. Neither factored in the scoring. The Michigan Juniors will face the Wisconsin Juniors this afternoon, as pool play continues.
• The Michigan Seniors routed Colorado 7-2. Stats were not available – check for an update here. Calumet’s Dean Loukus and Hancock’s Austin Salani play on that team. The Michigan Seniors face the Minnesota Seniors this afternoon.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team swept its doubleheader at Gogebic Community College yesterday, 14-8 and 11-3. In the first game, Melanie Torres had five hits, including a home run. She scored four times, and drove in four runs. In the nightcap, Jaden Matthews had three hits and drove in five runs. Elijah Marshall had three hits, and scored three runs. Harlie Caster set a new school career record for drawing walks.

The Finlandia softball team hosts Bay College for a doubleheader this afternoon. Coverage begins at 1:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Lions will face the Norse again in a Sunday doubleheader in Escanaba.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team plays doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Oshkosh this afternoon, tomorrow and Sunday.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will conclude its regular season at 1:00 this afternoon at home against Wisconsin-Parkside. 

College Esports

Lincoln Sorenson has been named the new Esports coach at Finlandia University. Sorensen will also serve as an Adjunct Instructor in Mathematics at Finlandia beginning this fall.

College Hockey

The MTU hockey team has revealed its awards for the 2020-2021 season. Trenton Bliss received the Merv Youngs Award as the most valuable player. Colin Swoyer claimed the Gitzen-Loutit Memorial Award as the team’s most outstanding defensive player for the second straight season. The Norbert Matovich Memorial Outstanding Freshman Award went to Arvid Caderoth. Alec Broetzman earned the George McCarthy Performance Award for Scholastic and Athletic Achievement. Tyler Rockwell claimed the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award. Chris Lipe was recognized with the Rick Yeo Unsung Hero Award. David Raisanen collected the John MacInnes Slide Rule Award with a 3.93 grade point average.

NHL

Jakub Vrana scored four goals, as the Detroit Red Wings ripped the Dallas Stars 7-3 last night. Luke Glendening, Richard Panik and Sam Gagner also scored for Detroit. Thomas Greiss stopped 43 shots. Tanner Kero had two assists for Dallas.

The Wings entertain the Stars again tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will finish the season without the injured Tyler Bertuzzi and Frans Nielsen. Dylan Larkin missed last night’s contest, after he was hurt in Tuesday’s game. It’s not known how much more time he might miss. Detroit has seven games remaining.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons fell to the San Antonio Spurs 106-91 last night. Josh Jackson led Detroit with 29 points. Isaiah Stewart collected 13 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Indiana Pacers tomorrow night.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 yesterday. José Ureña gave up two runs in the first inning, but settled down and pitched through the seventh with no additional damage. Detroit got one back in the second on an Akil Baddoo RBI triple, and tied the game with a JaCoby Jones home run in the fifth. Pittsburgh scored twice against José Cisnero and Gregory Soto in the eighth to claim the victory.

The Tigers host the Kansas City Royals tonight. Casey Mize will pitch against Mike Minor. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a series against the Cubs in Chicago this afternoon. Brett Anderson will start against Kyle Hendricks.

Milwaukee brought catcher Jacob Nottingham off the injured list yesterday, and immediately designated him for assignment.
