MLB
The Houston Astros scored three runs in the eighth inning, and edged the Detroit Tigers 6-5 last night. The Tigers had built a 5-3 lead, thanks to homers by Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera, and seven effective innings by Jordan Zimmermann. Bruce Rondón relieved him in the eighth, and gave up back-to-back singles before Josh Reddick’s home run brought Houston from behind.

The Tigers have dropped seven of their last nine games, and host the Astros again tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Collin McHugh. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Brent Suter threw seven shutout innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers shaded the Chicago Cubs 2-1 last night. Anthony Swarzak made his Milwaukee debut in the eighth inning, and gave up a long home run to Javier Báez. The Cubs mounted a threat against closer Corey Knebel in the ninth, but Knebel struck out pinch-hitter Kyle Schwarber to end the game.

The win moves the Brewers within a game-and-a-half of the first place Cubs in the National League Central Division. Those teams play in Milwaukee again tonight. Junior Guerra will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.

American Legion
The Copper Country Flames were eliminated from the American Legion Class A state tournament in Gladwin yesterday, falling to Gladstone 8-0. The game was close early, as Carter Nettel gave up just three runs before leaving in the fifth inning. The Indians scored five times in the seventh off reliever Carter Crouch to put the game away, and end the Flames’ tournament run. After having been held hitless in a 4-0 loss to Gaylord Thursday afternoon, Copper Country batters managed just four hits against Gladstone.

MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team has added another player for the upcoming season. Ignacio Carbajosa hails from Seville, Spain, and plans to pursue an engineering degree.

Crawford Benefit
A benefit spaghetti dinner will be held tonight at the Elks Lodge in Calumet to raise money to assist former Calumet High School hockey coach Jim Crawford and his family, who are rebuilding after a house fire this spring. Dinner will be served from 5:00 until 8:00. Tickets are $8.00, and are available in advance from any member of the Elks Club, or at the door.
