Football Wins for Hornets, Lakes and Gladiators – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The local high school football season kicked off last night…
• L’Anse dismantled Hancock 40-7.
• Ontonagon stopped Gogebic 34-8.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell rolled up a 38-8 halftime lead, and cruised past Carney-Nadeau 44-24. That game will count in the varsity standings, although Carney-Nadeau will not be playing out the rest of its season.

In football tonight…
• Calumet will visit Gladstone. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Houghton will welcome Westwood. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

In high school volleyball…
• The Copper Mountain Conference tournament will be played today in Ironwood.
• Houghton plays at the Queen City Invitational in Marquette.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team began its campaign with a 2-1 loss last night at Minnesota Duluth. Neve Badalow scored the Huskies’ goal. Tech plays at Saint Cloud State tomorrow.

College Volleyball

The MTU volleyball team opens its season at the Cal State Monterey Bay Tournament. The Huskies will face Cal Poly Pomona and Academy of Art University today, then play Cal State Dominguez Hills and the host team tomorrow.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team has brought in another player. Former Negaunee standout Natalie Bartle is transferring in from Nebraska-Omaha.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series at Texas tonight. Tyler Alexander will start against Glenn Otto. Coverage begins at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers also had yesterday off, and will visit the Cubs tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Justin Steele.

NFL

The Packers concluded their exhibition season last night with a 17-10 loss to the Chiefs. Jordan Love and Danny Etling split time at quarterback, with Love completing 16 of 26 passes for 148 yards and one interception.

The Lions wrap up their preseason schedule Sunday at Pittsburgh.
