Football Wins for Kings, Bulldogs and Hornets – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

L’Anse’s Jonah Dowd stiff-arms his way to a touchdown.

In high school football last night…
– Calumet throttled West Iron County 14-0 to remain unbeaten. Dryden Nelson scored both of the Copper Kings’ touchdowns.
– Hancock spotted Gwinn a 12-0 lead, the roared back to defeat the Modeltowners 27-12.
– L’Anse routed Munising 42-17.
– Ontonagon lost to North Central 71-0.

Today, Houghton plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell. It’s Hall of Fame Day for the Lakes. The newest class will be inducted at a reception this morning at 9:30 at the school. Learn about the third Hall of Fame class here.

In high school volleyball last night, Jeffers defeated Chassell 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17). Marissa Nordstrom and Lilly Turner led the Jets with 17 digs each. Turner and Brenna Hill each had 11 kills. 

In volleyball today…
– Calumet plays at the Duluth Invitational.
– Houghton competes at the Pulaski Invitational.
– L’Anse plays at the Forest Park Invitational.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team opened the Carthage Classic in Wisconsin with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-7) loss to Rose-Hulman last night. The Lions play Carthage and Concordia-Wisconsin today.

The Lions women’s soccer team hosts Lawrence this morning at 9:00.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-1 (27-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16) victory at Davenport University last night. Olivia Ghormley had 19 kills, including the 1,000th point of her career. Megan Utlak had 23 digs. The Huskies play at Grand Valley today.

The MTU football team begins its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference campaign this afternoon at Saginaw Valley State.

The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Davenport today.

The Tech soccer team is off this weekend.

MLB

Jordan Zimmerman was pounded for nine runs, as the Detroit Tigers lost 10-1 to the Chicago White Sox last night. Zimmermann served up 11 hits, including two home runs, three doubles and a triple, before leaving in the fourth inning.

The Tigers host the White Sox again tonight. Tyler Alexander will pitch against Ivan Nova. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers blasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1 last night. Chase Anderson gave up just three hits over six scoreless innings. Trent Grisham hit a bases-loaded triple.

The Brewers entertain the Pirates again this evening. Zach Davies will start against James Marvel.

The Cardinals defeated the Cubs, so Milwaukee remains three games behind Saint Louis in the National League Central Division. The Cubs are five games out. The Brewers lead Chicago by two games in the race for the final wild card playoff berth.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t hold a late lead, and lost 4-3 in overtime to the New York Islanders in preseason play last night. Andreas Athanasiou, Anthony Mantha and Philip Hronek scored for Detroit. Anthony Beauvillier tied the game with 94 seconds left in regulation, then scored the game-winner 32 seconds into overtime.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers host the Denver Broncos in a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Detroit Lions visit the Philadelphia Eagles for a 1:00 game. Lions pregame coverage will begin at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Calumet Wolverines play the Portage Lake Pioneers Tuesday at the Colosseum. Pregame coverage starts at 7:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
