Former Husky Named Gamblers Coach – Friday Sports Wrap

Morning Sports for Friday, June 6th:

MLB: Tigers
The Tigers’ woes continued Thursday, with a 7-3 loss to the Blue Jays. Justin Verlander gave up six runs over seven innings. Detroit has lost five games in a row… and now leads the American League Central Division by just two-and-a-half games over the White Sox.

The Tigers host the Red Sox tonight. Drew Smyly will face Rubby De La Rosa. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

The Tigers used their first pick in this year’s amateur draft Thursday to take high school outfielder Derek Hill from Elk Grove California. His skill set is said to be similar to that of Curtis Granderson. In the second round, they chose University of Alabama right-hander Spencer Turnbull… who sports a 98 miles per hour fastball.

Brewers
The Brewers blasted three home runs, and outslugged the Twins 8-5. Carlos Gomez, Khris Davis and Jonathan Lucroy went deep. Wily Peralta survived a four-run third inning to earn his first win in a month.

The Brewers open a series at Pittsburgh tonight. Kyle Lohse will start against Brandon Cumpton.

Milwaukee used their first pick in Thursday’s draft to take Hawaii high school pitcher Kodi Medeiros. In the second round, they picked power-hitting high school shortstop Jacob Gatewood, from Clovis, California… and high school outfielder Monte Harrison, from Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Twilight League Baseball
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball Thursday night…
– The Stanton Wildcats got past Wolverine/Orbit 8-6. Eric Nettle’s two-run homer in the sixth provided the winning margin. Cole Jepsen struck out eight to earn the complete-game win.
– The result from the game between Mosquito Inn and BlueSky Health was not reported.

Mikesch to Coach Gamblers
Hancock native Pat Mikesch has been named the head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. Mikesch skated for Michigan Tech in the ‘90s… and is the Huskies’ seventh all-time leading scorer. He played eight pro seasons in the minor leagues and Europe… then returned to serve as an assistant coach at Tech for seven seasons. He has been associate head coach and director of player personnel for the Gamblers for the past three years. His promotion came after former coach and general manager Derek Lalonde resigned to take a job with the Toledo Walleyes.

Baraga County Lake Trout Festival Tomorrow
Lake Trout FestivalThe Baraga County Lake Trout Festival takes place Saturday. The day includes the Keweenaw Classic Fishing Tournament. The required rules meeting begins tonight at 6:00 at the L’Anse American Legion Hall. Fishing is open tomorrow from 5:00 am until 4:00 pm on Keweenaw and Huron Bays. The Pequaming Run features a half-marathon, an eight-mile run or walk, and a five-k run or walk. The Tour da L’Anse Bike Race includes 50-mile and 22-mile events. The registration deadline is today. Free Fishing and ORV Weekend
This is Michigan’s Summer Free Fishing Weekend. Anyone can fish without a license Saturday and Sunday. All other fishing rules still apply. For the first time, Michigan is also holding a free ORV weekend. Residents and nonresidents may ride an ORV for free on state trails, with no license or trail permit required. Again, all other riding rules still apply.

In conjunction with Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend, a couple of events are scheduled. The 24th annual Kid’s Fishing Derby will be held at the Ontonagon Marina on Saturday. Registration begins at 9:00 am, and the event ends with the awarding of prizes at 1:00 pm. Every child that registers will receive a bag of fishing related freebies.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to register.

Activities will include:
– Casting Contest with prizes for kids in two age groups: 10 to 16 and 9 and under  (10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST)
– Minnow races with your own choice of “Supersonic Minnow” supplied on site!
– Prizes for Biggest Fish in several categories
– Fish Identification Contest with prizes for your correctly identified fish!
– Fyke Netting Demonstration!  Come and see what inhabits our waterways!  (12:00 p.m. EST)

All fishing should be done from the vicinity of the Ontonagon Marina where accessible piers are also available for all ability levels.  Some fishing poles and tackle will also be available to loan out as needed.

The 41st annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby will be held at the Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsmen’s Clubhouse at Rice Lake on Sunday. Registration will be open from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, with fishing open until 4:00 pm. The cost is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for juniors, and $1.00 for children. $5,000 worth of prizes will be awarded.
