Girls Hoops District Finals Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

All of last night’s boys basketball games were postponed because of the snowstorm, and all will be made up today…
– The Calumet at Hancock game will start at 5:30 – varsity only.
– The Jeffers at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City game will begin at 7:00 – varsity only. The senior athlete parent appreciation event will begin at 6:25.
– The Chassell at Lake Linden-Hubbell game will begin at 4:00 – varsity only. The Lakes parents night and drumline activities will take place at halftime.
– The Ontonagon at Baraga game will begin at 4:30 – varsity only.
– The Bessemer at L’Anse game will start at 4:30 – varsity only.

In girls high school basketball tournament district finals tonight…
 – In Division Three – Calumet plays at Hancock. Tip-off has been moved back to 7:15, after the boys make-up game. Our broadcast will begin around 6:55 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Purchase of the $6.00 MHSAA District Championship ticket will admit spectators to both the boys and girls games. 
– In Division Four, District 98 – Chassell plays at Baraga at 7:00.
– In Division Four, District 97 – Ewen-Trout Creek plays at L’Anse at 7:00.

Calumet will face Gaylord in the high school hockey state quarterfinal game tomorrow at 1:00 at Marquette. Our pregame coverage will begin at 12:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. We will follow the Copper Kings as far as they go in the playoffs.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

Michigan Tech visits Northern Michigan University for the opening round of the WCHA playoffs this weekend. Faceoffs at the Berry Events Center are at 7:07 tonight, 6:07 tomorrow, and 6:07 Sunday, if a third game is needed.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan men’s basketball teams will play in the GLIAC tournament semifinals tomorrow at Grand Valley State in Allendale. The third-seeded Huskies will take on the second-seeded host Lakers. The eight-seeded Wildcats will meet fourth-seeded Northwood.

Finlandia University

In Florida yesterday, the Finlandia softball team lost to Clark College 10-2, then exploded for 17 runs in the first inning, and buried Lehman College 24-2. In the second game, Denia Bent had four hits, scored two runs and drove in three. Harlie Caster had three hits, scored three runs and drove in five runs.

The Lions have today off.

The Finlandia baseball team had yesterday off, and will play two against Plymouth State today.

Great Lakes Hockey League

The Portage Lake Pioneers will entertain the Calumet Wolverines this evening. Faceoff is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Wolverines will visit the Eagle River Falcons tomorrow night.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Utah Jazz tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In spring baseball yesterday, the Detroit Tigers outslugged the New York Yankees 15-11 Miguel Cabrera and Travis Demeritte each blasted two home runs. Brandon Dixon, Jake Rogers, Jeimer Candelario, Jose Azocar and Brady Policelli each hit one out. Casey Mize started, and threw two scoreless innings.

The Tigers face the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers got past the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 yesterday. Starter Freddy Peralta threw two scoreless innings, but left as Cincy scored all four of their runs in the third inning.

The Brewers play the San Francisco Giants today.

Great Bear Chase

Last chance registration for the Great Bear Chase takes place today. Tomorrow’s event will include 50, 25 and 10k Freestyle and Classic races, along with a 50k Skiathlon. On-site registration will take place today between 4:00 and 8:30 at Calumet High School. There will be no race-day registration tomorrow. 

On-site registration and bib pick-up for this evening’s Junior Bear Chase will take place between 4:00 and 5:00 at the Swedetown Chalet, with races beginning shortly afterward.
