MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team opens play in the 53rd annual Great Lakes Invitational tournament this afternoon at 2:30. The Huskies will face Michigan State in the opening round. The University of Michigan will take on Bowling Green in the second opening-round game this evening. The consolation and championship games will be played tomorrow, and will be televised by Fox Sports Detroit. This will be the first time the tournament will be played at the new Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit. The Huskies haven’t won the GLI since 2012, when goaltender Pheonix Copley had a pair of shutouts, including a 4-0 win over Western Michigan in the championship game.

NHL
Gustav Nyquist scored twice, and Jimmy Howard made 37 saves, as the Detroit Red Wings outskated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 last night. Dylan Larkin and Frans Nielsen also scored, as Detroit won its second straight game.  The Wings host the Ottawa Senators Saturday. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons return to action Wednesday, when they play at Miami.

NFL
The Detroit Lions ripped the Green Bay Packers 35-11, as both teams closed their NFL seasons yesterday. Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes for Detroit, including a 79-yard strike to Golden Tate. Matt Prater kicked two field goals. Green Bay took an early lead with a Mason Crosby field goal, but didn’t score again until Brett Hundley connected with Randall Cobb for a 17-yard touchdown play in the fourth quarter. The Lions finish the season with a record of 9-7. The Pack closes at 7-9. Neither team reached the playoffs.

Our high school hockey coverage continues Tuesday, when Jeffers entertains Kingsford. The pregame show will start at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
