MLB – Tigers Host Pirates
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoThe Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and open a home set against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Gerrit Cole. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Tigers added some infield depth by picking up veteran Alexi Casilla from the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday. Casilla has been assigned to the Toledo Mud Hens. You may remember that it was Casilla who drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning for the Minnesota Twins when they defeated the Tigers 6-5 in a one-game playoff to determine the American League Central Division championship in 2009.

Jonathan Lucroy had four hits, as the Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 last night. Jimmy Nelson gave up two runs in the first, and two in the second… then settled down to complete five innings. He earned the win when Milwaukee scored three times in the top of the sixth to take the lead.

The Brewers continue that series against the Phillies tonight. Taylor Jungmann will start against Cole Hamels.

– At the Chassell field, the result of the game between Family Chiropractic and Auto Pro Glass and Tire was not reported. Pat’s Foods won by forfeit when North Star BP didn’t have enough players.
– At Lake Linden, Mattila Rock and Dock pounded Northern Michigan Land Brokers 15-1. Jana Underwood homered, Alexa Clouthier tripled, and Melissa Baker was the winning pitcher.

– A the Dollar Bay field, Wolverine/Orbit meets Blue Sky Health.
– At the Stanton field, Pat’s Foods/Mosquito Inn takes on the Stanton Wildcats.

Copper Country Horseshoe League
– L&L stopped Out of the Norm Tattoo 8-1.
– Fat Lil’ Bandits defeated North End Two 7-2.
– Drift Inn got past Loading Zone 6-3.
– Calumet One edged North End One 5-4.
– Ahmeek Fire Department shaded Dreamland 5-4.
– Calumet Two slipped past Gasoline Alley 5-4.

Finlandia Baseball Adds Three
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University baseball team has added three new players for next season. Hugh Turner III is a utility player from Moffat County, Colorado. Curtis Derome hit .577 last season at the Academy for Business and Technology in Melvindale, Michigan. Keyan Iwanowicz is from Detroit, and can play catcher or first base. Schools Announce GLIAC Departure
GLIAC LogoThe contraction of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference continues. Last month, Malone University had announced it would leave the league after the 2015-2016 season. Yesterday, Findlay, Hillsdale, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican and Walsh announced that they would end their memberships after the 2016-2017 season. All are headed to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, which has members that more closely match their enrollment levels, and which are located closer to their homes. The move leaves 10 schools in the GLIAC, with Ashland and Tiffin the only ones outside the state of Michigan.

Lidstrom, Federov to Hockey Hall
Longtime Detroit Red Wings teammates Nicklas Lidstrom and Sergei Fedorov have been named to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The two skated together in Detroit for 12 seasons. They join Chris Pronger, Phil Housley, four-time Olympian Angela Ruggiero, team owner Peter Karmanos Jr. and executive Bill Hay in this year’s class.

Monroe Confirms Pistons Departure
Detroit Pistons’ free agent Greg Monroe has confirmed that he will not be returning to the Motor City next season. Monroe told the Baton Rouge Advocate that he has interviews with five other teams lined up next week.
