Gremlin Baseball Drops Two – Saturday Sports Wrap

Detroit Tigers Circle LogoMLB – Tigers Nearly No-Hit
The Detroit Tigers’ bats remained quiet last night, as they fell to the Kansas City Royals 4-1. KC pitchers Chris Young and Ryan Madson held Detroit batters hitless through seven innings. Young did walk the bases loaded in the fourth, but struck out J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes to maintain the shutout. Nick Castellanos broke up the no-hit bid in the eighth, and later scored on an Anthony Gose groundout. Kyle Lobstein gave up three runs in the first inning, and another in the third, but pitched into the eighth. He took the loss.

The win gives Kansas City a 1.5-game lead over Detroit in the American League Central Division.

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City tonight. David Price will start against Edinson Volquez. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Brewers LogoThe Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago Cubs 1-0 yesterday. Milwaukee batters collected just four hits against Jon Lester and two Chicago relievers. Wily Peralta took the loss, giving up the only run of the game on eight hits over six innings.

The Brewers continue that set against the Cubs in Chicago this afternoon. Mike Fiers will pitch against Jake Arrieta.

In high school baseball yesterday, Houghton lost two at Norway, 4-0 and 7-4.

Lake Linden Hubbell LogoThe Lake Linden-Hubbell track teams swept their own Lakes Invitational meet yesterday. On the women’s side, the Lakes outpointed Hancock 154 to 130. Dollar Bay finished third, followed by Chassell, Jeffers and Baraga. On the men’s side, Lake Linden-Hubbell easily passed Hancock 199 to 102. Dollar Bay placed third, followed by Baraga and Chassell.

NFL Draft – Second and Third Rounds
Detroit Lions LionThe Detroit Lions used their second pick in the NFL draft to take Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah. Abdullah is seen as a complement to Joique Bell, with breakaway speed and good receiving skills. In the third round, Detroit traded up to select Stanford cornerback Alex Carter.

The Detroit Lions used their first pick in the NFL draft Thursday night to pick Duke guard Laken Tomlinson.

Green Bal Packers LogoThe Green Bay Packers continued to bolster their defensive backfield by taking Quinten Rollins from Miami of Ohio in the second round. Rollins is described as “very athletic,” and was also a basketball player. In the third round, the Packers selected Stanford wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Montgomery was projected as a first-round pick before a disappointing senior season with the Cardinal.

In the first round Thursday night, Green Bay took Damarious Randall from Arizona State. Randall could play either safety or defensive back.

The final three rounds of the draft will take place today.

Quincey Set for Surgery
Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Kyle Quincey will have surgery to remove bone spurs from his ankle next week. The painful spurs bothered him all season. He’s expected to be ready for training camp.
