In girls’ high school basketball last night…
– The Houghton Gremlins took over first place in the WestPAC with a gritty 37-34 victory over Calumet. The Gremlins took an early lead, but the Copper Kings came back to lead by three at halftime. Houghton outscored Calumet 15-10 in the fourth quarter… taking the lead for good on a three-pointer by Michelle Laux. Sloane Zenner led all scorers with 14 points. Ellen Twardzik scored 10 for the Copper Kings, who suffered their first loss of the season. You can see video highlights from last night’s game here.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell slipped past Dollar Bay 37-34.
– Hancock outscored Ontonagon 41-30.
– Chassell edged Jeffers 46-43.
– L’Anse lost to Negaunee 45-33.
– Ewen-Trout Creek fell to West Iron County 62-49.
– The Baraga – Republic-Michigamme game was postponed because of the death of Hawks’ coach Matthew Davidson. No make-up date has been announced.

Following victories over Ferris State and Grand Valley last weekend, the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has moved up to 19th in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II Poll. See the entire poll here.

Red Wings LogoNHL – Red Wings Edge Wild in Shootout
The Red Wings couldn’t hold a 4-1 third-period lead, but finally got past the Wild 5-4 in a shootout last night. Pavel Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist scored in the shootout. Teemu Pulkkinen scored his first career goal for Detroit, and Petr Mrazek made 34 saves. After the All-Star break, the Wings will return to action Tuesday at Carolina. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Host Magic
The Pistons entertain the Magic tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MLB – Putkonen, Hanrahan Get Major-League Invites
The Detroit Tigers have invited 17 players on minor-league contracts to their major-league training camp next month. Among them are pitchers Luke Putkonen and Joel Hanrahan. Putkonen missed much of last season with an injury. He recently cleared waivers, and was signed to a minor league deal. Hanrahan is a former All-Star closer who continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. By a month from today, pitchers and catchers will be working out in Lakeland.
