Gremlins Fall, Hornets Win in Boys Hoops Tourney Openers – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

On the opening night of the boys high school basketball tournament…

  • In the Division Two District, Houghton’s season ended with a 75-60 loss to Kingsford. The Gremlins got off to a cold start, while the Flivvers hit seven three-pointers in the first half to open up a 40-20 halftime lead. Brad Sirard led the Gremlins with 27 points, and passed the 1,000-point career scoring mark. George Butvilas added 24 points.
  • In the Division Three District, L’Anse held off Norway 30-26. The Purple Hornets limited the Knights to just four points in the first half. Louie Bogda scored 17 for L’Anse. The Hornets will host Calumet tomorrow night. Pregame coverage will start around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
  • In the Division Four District at Chassell, the Panthers’ game against Lake Linden-Hubbell was postponed until tonight.
  • In the Division Four District at Ewen-Trout Creek, the Jeffers game against Watersmeet, and the Ewen-Trout Creek contest against Ontonagon were also postponed until this evening.

  • Houghton entertains Ishpeming.
  • Hancock travels to West Iron County.

The Detroit Pistons defeated the Indiana Pacers 113-109 last night. Andre Drummond led Detroit with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Blake Griffin added a triple-double, with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The Pistons have won seven of their last eight, and visit the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow night. MLB

Half of the Detroit Tigers lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 12-7 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Jordan Zimmermann struck out four over two perfect innings. Cristin Stewart and Grayson Greiner homered. The other half of the Bengals played to a 3-3 tie with the Saint Louis Cardinals. Starter Daniel Norris threw two scoreless innings.The Tigers will face a split New York Mets squad this afternoon. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 4-3 Cactus League game to the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. Cory Spangenberg hit a home run. The Brewers will face the San Diego Padres today.
