Gremlins Fall in Season-Opening Swim Meet – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Houghton boys and girls swim teams both fell to Marquette in their first meet of the season yesterday – the girls 129-50, and the boys 123-59.

On the boys side, Archer Olson won the 100 fly and 500 free, and Chase Crisman took first place in his first-ever diving competition.

The Hancock/Lake Linden/Jeffers combined JV hockey team will hold a returnable can and bottle drive tomorrow. Bring your donations to the parking lot of the Houghton County Arena between 8:00 and noon. Proceeds will support team expenses.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow night. The Huskies have won seven straight, and are ranked 18th in the latest USCHO.com poll. Bowling Green is ranked eighth nationally, but is coming off a pair of losses at Bemidji State.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team hosts Ferris State University tonight and tomorrow night.

College Basketball

Both Tech basketball teams face Ferris today and tomorrow. The men’s games are in Houghton, and the women’s contests are in Big Rapids.

Both Northern hoops squads take on Lake Superior State tomorrow and Sunday. The men are at home, and the women play at the Soo.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ struggles continued with a 7-3 loss to the Dallas Stars last night. Valterri Filppula, Tyler Bertuzzi and Danny DeKeyser scored for Detroit. Jonathan Bernier started in net for Detroit, and gave up three goals. He left the contest at the end of the second period, after suffering an upper body injury in a collision with teammate Anthony Mantha. Thomas Griess finished the game in goal.

Tanner Kero had two assists for the Stars.

After the game, coach Jeff Blashill said he didn’t think Bernier’s injury will be long-term.

The Wings entertain the Florida Panthers tomorrow evening. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Former Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard has officially retired. Howard played 11 seasons for the Wings, and was a three-time all-star. After struggling last season, Detroit did not offer him a contract.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons stunned the Los Angeles Lakers 107-92 last night. Detroit took control with a 16-0 run late in the game. Blake Griffin led the Pistons with 23 points. Wayne Ellington added 20. Mason Plumlee grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Golden State Warriors tomorrow night.

MLB

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Blaine Hardy has signed a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. Hardy missed last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March.

NFL

There are reports that the Detroit Lions are set to hire Mark Brunell as their quarterbacks coach. Brunell played 19 years in the NFL, and earned three Pro Bowl appearances. For the past eight seasons, he has been a successful high school coach in Florida.

Just exactly whom Brunell will be coaching at quarterback remains up in the air. The Lions have announced their intention to trade Matthew Stafford, but interest from other teams has been lukewarm, so far. Detroit will have to make a $10 million bonus contract payment to Stafford if he’s still on their roster March 21st.
