The girls’ high school basketball tournament opened last night.

In Class D at Baraga…
Jeffers Jets Logo– The Copper Country Conference champion Jeffers Jets overcame a slow start, and eliminated Dollar Bay 43-30. The Blue Bolts led by six after the first quarter, but the Jets roared back to take a five-point halftime lead, and Dollar Bay never threatened after that. CCC Player of the Year Haley Makela led all scorers with 15 points for Jeffers. Ivy Klemett added 10. Jamie Sertich and Carli Daavettila each scored nine for the Blue Bolts. Jeffers will face Chassell tomorrow evening at 6:00.
– Ontonagon broke open a close game with an 11-0 run to start the second half, and defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 38-32. Lori Wardynski and Hope Pintar each scored 14 for the Gladiators. Sarah Audette led the Lakes with 13 points. Ontonagon will meet Baraga tomorrow evening at 7:30. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Calumet-Hancock Logos FeatureIn Class C at Calumet… Hancock ousted L’Anse 44-37. Calumet shut down 63-18. The Bulldogs and Copper Kings will meet for the District title tomorrow night at 7:00.

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoIn Class B, Houghton defeated Menominee 39-30. The Gremlins will face Kingsford at Houghton tomorrow night. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. Escanaba will play at Gladstone in the other Class B District semifinal tomorrow night.

Houghton Hancock LogosThe state high school hockey tournament begins tonight, when Hancock faces Houghton at MacInnes Arena. Pregame coverage begins around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear 102.com.

Houghton dominated the Great Lakes Hockey Conference All-Star Team that was announced yesterday. Reid Pietila, Tristan Foltz and Marcus Gloss were named to the first team. Cale Markham was voted to the second team, and Jon Bostwick earned an honorable mention. Houghton coach Corey Markham was named Coach of the Year. Hancock’s Hunter Kero was named to the first team. Dylan Paavola and Jack Fenton were placed on the second team. Calumet’s Robbie Erkkila was an honorable mention. Jake Phillips from Marquette and Levi Wunder from Escanaba filled out the first team. MTU Players Honored
Michigan Tech men’s basketball player Ben Stelzer has been named the GLIAC Player of the Year. Stelzer led the league in scoring, and set a new Huskies’ record for three-point shots. It’s the seventh time in the past 14 years that a Husky has been named the men’s Player of the Year. Jordan Chartier was named to the GLIAC All-Conference Second Team, and All-Defensive Team.

Huskies’ women’s player Jillian Richie was named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week for the third time this season. She scored 22 points in Tech’s win over Northern Michigan last week.

After a tie and a loss to second-ranked Minnesota State last weekend, the Michigan Tech hockey team has slipped from third to fourth in both the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. Check both polls here.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia baseball team opened its season in Florida yesterday. The Lions lost twice to Newbury College, 2-1 and 13-0. Finlandia will face Otterbein twice today.

The Finlandia softball team has also arrived in Florida, and plays St. Vincent College and Widener University today.

NHL – Red Wings Prep for Rangers
The Detroit Red Wings host the New York Rangers tomorrow night. We’ll join the game in progress after the Houghton girls’ playoff game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit added some defensive depth yesterday by obtaining Marek Zidlicky from the Devils. New Jersey will get at least one draft pick in exchange… depending on how far Detroit goes in the playoffs this season.

NBA – Pistons Ready for Pelicans
The Detroit Pistons play at New Orleans tomorrow.

NFL – Lions Re-sign Orlovsky
The Detroit Lions have re-signed backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky to a one-year contract. The Lions also decided not to apply the franchise player tag to Ndamukong Suh. Suh becomes a free agent.

The Detroit Tigers stretched their legs for the first time this spring with a 12-2 victory over  Florida Southern College in their annual exhibition game yesterday. The Tigers open their Grapefruit League schedule against the Orioles this afternoon. Hear the first pitch at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
