Gremlins Take Wing Ding Hockey Game – Wednesday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey last night, the Houghton Gremlins scored four times on a major penalty to start the third period, and skated to a 7-1 victory over Hancock in the annual Wing Ding match. It was a close 2-1 game when the major was assessed with 10 seconds left in the second period, opening the door for Houghton’s outburst in the third. In boys’ high school basketball last night…
Lake Linden Hubbell Logo– Lake Linden-Hubbell took control of the Copper Country Conference by beating second-place Republic-Michigamme 71-44. Brett Poissant led the Lakes with 22 points.
– Calumet stopped Chassell 55-29.
– The Hancock-Baraga game was postponed because the Baraga schools were closed. No make-up date has been provided.
– Houghton outscored Jeffers 64-50. Nate Gockenbach scored 25 for the Gremlins.
– Dollar Bay lost to Watersmeet 60-36.
– Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Carney-Nadeau 78-56.

In the girls’ action last night…
– Calumet outscored Negaunee 34-14 in the second half to pull out a 48-40 victory. See video highlights of the game here.
– Jeffers defeated Ontonagon 54-40.

NHL – Red Wings Prep for Penguins
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Pittsburgh tonight. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. Jimmy Howard will be back with the team, but Petr Mrazek will make the start in goal. After missing a month with a groin injury, Howard is expected to start Saturday night’s game against the Jets.

NBA – Pistons Stifle Hornets
The Pistons shut down the Hornets 106-78 last night. Monroe had 23 points and 12 rebounds. D.J. Augustin added 18 points for Detroit. The Pistons host the Spurs tonight.

MLB – Martinez Could Be Ready for Opening Day
Tigers’ designated hitter Victor Martinez underwent knee surgery yesterday, and the news is good. Doctors clipped out a torn piece of cartilage, and said he faces a four-to-six-week recovery period. He could be ready for opening day. If reconstruction of the cartilage had been required, he could have been out for six months.
