Gremlins to Quarterfinals – Sunday Sports Wrap

Houghton Hockey 2015-03-07High School
Wyatt Liston’s overtime goal gave Houghton a 2-1 victory over Calumet Saturday night, and earned the Gremlins a berth in the state high school hockey tournament quarterfinals. Liston’s unassisted tally spoiled a goaltending gem by Calumet’s Ian Carroll, who held the Gremlins scoreless until Cale Markham tied the game with 2:16 remaining in regulation. Jacob Anderson’s second period goal had given Calumet the lead. Carroll stopped 33 shots for the Copper Kings. Houghton’s Marcus Gloss made 27 saves. The Gremlins will face Sault Ste. Marie in the Division Three quarter-final Wednesday night in Marquette at 7:00. Hear the broadcast on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.

In the girls’ high school basketball tournament Friday night…
– In Class B, Houghton win the District title with a 42-28 victory over Escanaba. The Gremlins’ defense held the Eskymos to just two points in the first quarter, and never let Escanaba back into the game. Houghton will face Kalkaska in the Regional semifinal Tuesday night at 7:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
– In Class D, Lori Wardynski’s off-balance layup with one second remaining lifted Ontonagon to a 38-36 victory over Jeffers in the District title game. The Jets trailed by 10 at halftime, but came back to take a brief late lead. Wardynski led all scorers with 22 points. Alexa Clouthier scored 17 for the Jets. The Gladiators will face Forest Park in the Regional semifinal Tuesday night at 6:00 at Kingsford.

Conference champion Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated the Copper Country Conference Boys All-Star Team announced Friday. Brett Poissant of the Lakes was named Most Valuable Player. Lake Linden’s Jack Kumpula was selected as Coach of the Year. Teammates Tyler Roose and Arthur Lyons made the First Team, along with Baraga’s Brendan Varline. Second team honorees included Zach Nichols from Jeffers, Taylor Beaudry from Ontonagon, Lars Daavettila from Chassell, and Devin Schmitz from Dollar Bay. Honorable mention votes went to Jeffers’ Brant Ryynanen, Baraga’s Austin Smith, and Lake Linden’s Lucas Klein.

MTU Sweeps NMU
Fourth-ranked Michigan Tech completed a weekend sweep of Northern Michigan University with a 3-1 victory Saturday night in Marquette. Tyler Heinonen, Reis Sturos and Tanner Kero scored for the Huskies, and Jamie Phillips stopped 20 shots to earn his 25th win of the season. See video highlights here.

On Friday, Blake Pietila and Tyler Heinonen each scored twice, as Tech defeated Northern Michigan 5-1. Jamie Phillips made 20 saves to earn the win.

WCHA leader Minnesota State defeated Bemidji State 3-0 Saturday, and finished the season a point ahead of the Huskies. Tech will be seeded second in the WCHA tournament, and will host Alabama-Huntsville in a best-of-three series at MacInnes Arena beginning Friday night.

Northern Michigan is seeded sixth in the tournament, and will play at Bowling Green.

GLIAC Hoops Tourney
The top-seeded and ninth-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team overcame a five-point deficit in the final five minutes, and defeated Grand Valley State 77-66 Saturday. With Tech leading by three with 1:10 remaining, Jillian Richie hit a critical three-pointer. The Huskies then sank eight free throws down the stretch to secure a place in the GLIAC tournament championship game. Richie led Tech with 27 points. Danielle Blake grabbed 14 rebounds.

The Huskies will face Ashland in the GLIAC title game this afternoon at 2:00. The Eagles eliminated Walsh 80-64 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Danielle Blake and Jillian Richie were both named to the All-GLIAC First Team Friday. Both were also named to the All-Defensive Team. Huskies’ coach Kim Cameron was named Coach of the Year. Alyssa Colla and Lauren Gruber of Northern Michigan University were also named to the First Team and All-Defensive Team. See the full list of honorees here.

Finlandia
The Finlandia baseball team wrapped up its Florida trip Friday with a 25-3 loss to John Carroll University.

The Finlandia softball team continues its Florida schedule today with games against the University of Rochester and Saint Mary’s College from Indiana.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the West Bend Bombers 13-5 Friday night. The Pioneers edged the Fond du Lac Bears 7-6 in a shootout Saturday. Connor Hannon and Ryan Sullivan each scored twice for the Pioneers. The Calumet Wolverines dropped a 7-4 decision at Fond du Lac Friday night, and fell at West Bend 12-2 Saturday night.

NHL – Red Wings Visit Boston
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Boston this afternoon. Face-off is at 12:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Entertain Charlotte
The Detroit Pistons host the Hornets tonight. Tip-off is at 6:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Justin Verlander gave up one hit over two scoreless innings in his spring debut, and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Braves 12-6 on Saturday. Hernan Perez and Anthony Gose each had three hits for Detroit. The Tigers play the Astros this afternoon. Shane Greene will make his first spring start for Detroit.

Hector Gomez homered and drove in three runs, but the Brewers fell to the Rangers 5-4 Saturday. The Brewers face the Dodgers this afternoon.

NFL
Several media outlets are reporting that the Green Bay Packers have signed receiver Randall Cobb to a four-year, $40 million deal. The team has not confirmed the story.

– In the 50k Skiathlon, Chris Pappathopoulos from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, took the title. Karl Walczak from Berkeley, California finished four minutes off the pace. Natalia Naryshkina from Verona, Wisconsin was the top women’s finisher.
– In the 50k Freestyle, Jan Myrda from Palos Heights, Illinois finished first, three-and-a-half minutes ahead of Kyle Marshall from Shoreville, Minnesota. Paulette Niemi from Ironwood was the fastest woman.
– In the 50-k Classic, Ben Cogger from Duluth finished first. Scott Nesvold from Washburn, Wisconsin was more than seven minutes back in second place, and Chandra Ziegler from Crystal Falls was the top women’s finisher.
– In the 25k Freestyle, Darrell Morse finished first, nearly four minutes ahead of Timothy Spaulding of Green Bay. Houghton’s Timothy Stone placed third. Kristina Morse from Hayward, Wisconsin was the top woman.
– In the 25k Classic, Mike Wiitala crossed the finish line more than two minutes ahead of Ethan Kennedy of Montague, Michigan. Houghton’s Ruth Oppliger was the fastest woman.
– In the 10k Freestyle, Gavin Martell won a photo finish – a half-second better than Eli Hancock from Cable, Wisconsin. Ally Swenson from Ringle, Wisconsin took the women’s title.
– In the 10k Classic, Scott Hickman from AuTrain finished nearly eight minutes ahead of Ezequiel Medici from Hancock. Lauren Lackman from Wausau was the fastest woman.
