In boys high school basketball action last night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell’s bid for a perfect season ended with a 50-48 loss to Houghton. Sean Hyslop scored 19 for the Gremlins, who overcame a seven-point halftime deficit. Arthur Lyons of the Lakes led all scorers with 25. See video highlights from the game here.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged Hancock 66-63 in overtime.
– Chassell cruised past Baraga 71-34. Hunter Rautiola scored 16 for the Panthers. Brendan Varline led the Vikings with 11.
– L’Anse fell to Ontonagon 52-36. Mitch Borseth had 25 points for the Gladiators.
– Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Watersmeet 68-49. Jake Witt scored 24 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for the Panthers.

In boys play tonight…
– Jeffers visits Republic-Michigamme.
– Houghton travels to Ishpeming.
Both of those games are make-ups from February 2nd.

Calumet dominates the All-WestPAC Girls Basketball team. Clara Loukus of the Copper Kings was named Player of the Year, and Jeff Twardzik earned Coach of the Year honors. Calumet’s Leah Killunen was named to the First Team, along with Molly Berg and Taylor Pertile from Hancock, Sloane Zenner from Houghton, and Emmy Kinner from West Iron County. Alexa Anderson and Loretta Halonen from Calumet were named to the Second Team, and are joined by Tawna Ryynanen of Houghton, Maija Sebbas of Hancock, and Bailey Froberg from L’Anse. Honorable Mention votes went to Calumet’s Janie Torola, Houghton’s Morgan Colling, Lauren Elmblad and Alexis Francois of L’Anse, and Erin Angeli from West Iron County.

In high school hockey last night, Houghton’s William Stier made 29 stops as the Gremlins shutout Jeffers 3-0. Jacob Kruse scored the game-winner 14 seconds into the second period. Casey Lentowich and Cole Jepsen also tallied for the Gremlins. Jacob Zerbst stopped 29 shots in goal for the Jets.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team built a 14 point lead early in the third quarter, then hung on for a 69-61 victory at Maranatha Baptist University last night. Mikayla Hakala led Finlandia with 26 points – 17 in the second half. The Lions close their regular season with a record of 2-23, and head to the Great South Athletic Conference tournament, which begins Friday at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The Detroit Red Wings broke their four-game losing streak with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets last night. Riley Sheahan scored Detroit’s only goal in regulation, and also netted one of the Wings’ two goals in the shootout. Petr Mrazek made 28 saves. The Wings are off until Saturday night’s outdoor game against the Avalanche in Denver. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the 76ers tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers have signed former Milwaukee Brewer Casey McGehee to a minor-league contract. He’ll provide depth at third base and first base, and will probably open the season at Toledo.

The Red Jacket Cyclotron will be held Saturday on the Tech Trails. The fat tire bike event will include a 30-minute race at 5:00, and a 60-minute race beginning at 5:40. The entry fee is 5.00 for Michigan Tech Trails season pass holders. An additional $10.00 trail pass is required for those without a season pass. On-site registration will be available.

The Keweenaw Bay Cutters will hold their ninth annual Hunters Heritage Banquet at the L’Anse American Legion Hall Saturday night. Doors open at 5:00. Dinner will be served at 6:30. Tickets should be purchased in advance by calling Nick Lindemann at 231-9683. A limited number of tickets may be available at the door.

Our final regular-season high school high school basketball broadcast will be Friday night, when Chassell plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
