Gremlins Win Football Opener, Kings Fall – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
• Calumet fell at Gladstone 42-13. The Braves scored on their first five possessions. Calumet found the endzone late in the first half when Aksel Loukus hit Amar Patterson with a 45-yard halfback option pass. Alan Bjorn added a one-yard touchdown plunge early in the fourth quarter.
• Houghton edged Westwood 14-12. The Gremlins struck early, when Cam Markham connected on a 63 yard pass to Gaborik Carlson on the first play from scrimmage. Markham scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter. The Patriots responded with a touchdown late in the second quarter. They held the ball for most of the second half, allowing Houghton just two possessions, but could add just one more score.

In high school volleyball…
• The Copper Mountain Conference tournament at Ironwood Friday – no report.
• Houghton at the Queen City Invitational in Marquette Friday – no report.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Saint Cloud State today.

College Volleyball

The MTU volleyball team won both of its matches at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational yesterday, downing Cal Poly Pomona 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) and Academy of Art 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17). The Huskies will play Cal State Dominguez Hills and the host team today.

MLB

The Tigers fell behind early, and lost to the Rangers 7-6 last night. Texas scored all their runs off Tyler Alexander over the first three innings. Riley Green led a Detroit comeback, driving in four runs. His third hit of the night was a two-run homer in the ninth that closed the gap to one, but the Tigers could get no closer.

The Tigers play at Texas again tonight. Eduardo Rodriguez will start against Dallas Keuchel. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the Cubs 4-3 in 10 innings. Freddy Peralta turned in six shutout innings, and left with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Tyrone Taylor home run. Chicago scored twice off Matt Bush in the seventh. Rowdy Tellez’ solo homer in the bottom of the ninth forced the extra frame. Ian Happ’s second homer of the night off Devin Williams put the Cubs up by two in the top of the 10th. The Crew loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but could score just once before Jace Peterson grounded into a double play to end the game.

The Brewers will visit the Cubs again this evening. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Drew Smyly.

Peterson was in the lineup after having been brought off the injured list. Pablo Reyes was sent back to Nashville to make room on the roster.

NFL

The Lions wrap up their preseason schedule Sunday at Pittsburgh.

NHL

The Red Wings have re-signed restricted free agent Filip Zadina. Reports are that it’s a three-year deal worth $5.5 million.
