High School

The Calumet High School volleyball team can resume practices as early as Monday.

The Copper Kings are one of 32 teams that were still alive in the state tournament when most high school athletic competition was halted by COVID-19 rules in November.

Yesterday, the Michigan High School Athletic Association released the timeline and procedures for completing that tournament. Participants will take part in the pilot rapid testing program that football players will begin today. Athletes and those associated with the team will be tested three times each week. All must test negative for COVID-19 before a team can begin practicing.

Volleyball quarterfinal games are scheduled to be played January 12th. Calumet is set to face Beaverton. Semifinals and finals will be staged January 14th through 16th at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

The Finlandia University softball team has introduced another new recruit. Briana Gitchell is an infielder and pitcher who was the team MVP at St. Joseph High School downstate as a sophomore in 2019.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team plays at Ferris State tonight.

Former Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou has signed a one-year free agent contract with the Los Angeles Kings. The Wings had traded Athanasiou to the Edmonton Oilers last season.

The Detroit Pistons dropped to 0-4 for the season, as they lost to the Golden State Warriors 116-106 last night. For the second straight night, Jerami Grant led Detroit with 27 points. Mason Plumlee snared 10 rebounds. Blake Griffin left the game at halftime after taking a hard blow to his face. He’ll undergo concussion protocol. Killian Hayes was forced out early in the third quarter with a sprained ankle.
