Hancock Advances in Hockey Regional – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
Hancock advanced to the high school hockey regional semifinals with a 3-2 victory over Houghton last night. The first period was scoreless. Alex Nordstrom’s first goal of the evening gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after two periods. The lead increased to 3-0 in the third period, with a power play goal by Austin Salani, and Nordstrom’s second tally of the night. The Gremlins rallied with late goals by Dawson McKay and Taavi Rajala, but Hancock held on for the win.

That sets up the regional semifinals tomorrow night. Calumet faces Jeffers at 6:00. Hancock takes on L’Anse at 8:00. Our coverage from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena will begin around 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In boys regular season high school basketball last night…
– Calumet got past Houghton 60-54. The Copper Kings could clinch a share of the WestPAC title with a win tomorrow at Hancock.
– L’Anse edged Hancock 70-60 in overtime.
– Chassell defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 58-49.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City downed Republic-Michigamme 65-55. Jaden Janke scored 18 for the Blue Bolts, and Jacob Iacono and Devin Schmitz each added 17. The Blue Bolts could close out an undefeated regular-season with a win tomorrow night at Jeffers.
– Jeffers downed Baraga 64-45.
– Ewen-Trout Creek cruised past Wakefield-Marenisco 67-46. Jake Witt had 33 points and 23 rebounds.
– Ontonagon outscored Watersmeet 77-33.

The girls high school district basketball tournament continues tonight…
– In Class C, Houghton and L’Anse will meet for the district title at 7:00 at L’Anse. Pregame coverage will start around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In Class D at Jeffers High School, Ontonagon will face Dollar Bay-Tamarack City in the first district semifinal tonight at 6:00. Chassell will meet Baraga in the second district semifinal at 7:30.

Finlandia
Two Finlandia University women’s basketball players have been placed on the American Collegiate Athletic Association All-Conference Team. Former Dollar Bay standout Julia Daavettila was named to the first team, and former Houghton Gremlin Kelsie Richards was placed on the second team.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournaments open tonight…
– The second-seeded Michigan Tech women’s team hosts Ferris State at 5:30 at the SDC. The sixth-seeded Huskies men’s team plays at Wayne State at 7:30.
– The sixth-seeded Northern Michigan University women’s squad plays at Grand Valley State tonight. The fifth-seeded Wildcats men’s team plays at Ashland this evening.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Saint Louis Blues tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons entertain the Milwaukee Bucks tonight.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers exploded for eight runs over the first three innings, then held on to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-6 yesterday afternoon. All of Philadelphia’s runs came in the fourth inning off Alex Wilson. Mike Fiers turned in two shutout frames in his first start of the spring. Hopefuls Derek Norris, Chad Huffman and Niko Goodrum homered for Detroit.  The Tigers face the New York Yankees this afternoon. Prospect Nick Franklin homered, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 yesterday. Starter Chase Anderson turned in two scoreless innings. The Brewers meet the San Francisco Giants this afternoon.
