Hancock Dominates Copper Island Classic – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey, Hancock claimed the John H. Sherf Trophy with a convincing 4-1 victory over Calumet in the finale of the Copper Island Classic Saturday evening. Combined with the Bulldogs’ 3-0 in the opening game of the Classic Friday, Hancock took the total-goals series 7-1.

The first four state high school football tournament championship games were played Saturday…

• Harper Woods scrambled past Grand Rapids South Christian 33-27 in the Division Four.
• Kingsley outscored Almont 38-24 in the Division Six game.
• Muskegon defeated Warren De La Salle Collegiate 33-21 in the Division Two contest.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Minnesota State with a 3-2 victory Saturday evening. Goals by Isaac Gordon and Jack Works built a 2-1 lead for the Huskies. Max Koskipirtti added an insurance tally 77-seconds remaining, which became the game-winner when the Mavericks scored an empty-netter in the closing minute. Blake Pietila made 29 saves, as the Huskies recorded their first ever sweep in Mankato.

Northern Michigan salvaged a weekend split at Bowling Green with a 2-0 victory Saturday. Beni Halasz stopped 30 shots to claim the shutout in net for the Wildcats.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team fell to Minnesota-Duluth 85-70 Saturday. The 16th-ranked Bulldogs took command midway through the first half. Marcus Tomashek led the Huskies with 23 points. Tech welcomes ninth-ranked Minnesota State-Moorhead today at 1:00.

The Northern men’s basketball team dropped an 83-79 overtime decision at Minnesota State-Moorhead Saturday. Max Weisbrod scored a career-high 32 points. The Wildcats host Minnesota-Duluth today.

The Tech women’s team faltered in the fourth quarter, and lost at 25th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth 69-59 Saturday. The Huskies were outscored 22-8 in the final stanza. Alyssa Wypych paced Tech with a career-best 19 points. MTU plays at Saint Cloud State today.

The NMU women’s team fell 65-56 at Saint Cloud State Saturday. Makaylee Kuhn scored 16 for the Wildcats, who play at Minnesota-Duluth today.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Wild this afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons welcome the Wizards on Monday.

NFL

In tonight’s NFL game, the Ravens visit the Chargers. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
