Hancock, Jeffers Win Golf Titles – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB: Tigers Slip Past A’s
Rick Porcello overcame some control issues, and the Tigers edged the Athletics 5-4 Thursday night. Porcello walked six batters before leaving with two outs in the sixth inning… but held the A’s to just two runs, and earned his eighth victory of the season. Joe Nathan earned his 13th save, despite giving up two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Ian Kinsler doubled twice, scored twice, and drove in a run.

Detroit opens a weekend series at Seattle tonight. Justin Verlander will face Hisashi Iwakuma. Hear the first pitch at 10:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Outfielder Rajai Davis missed last night’s game with a sore shoulder. He’s considered day-to-day.

Brewers Welcome Cubs
The Brewers had yesterday off, and open a home set against the Cubs this evening. Marco Estrada will start against Travis Wood.

Twilight League Baseball
In Twilight League baseball last night…
– Pat’s Foods blanked BlueSky Health 4-0. Lee Naugle went the distance for Pat’s, and struck out eight.
– Mosquito Inn shut down the Stanton Wildcats 8-2. Justin Kirby struck out 10 over six innings for Mosquito Inn, and Will Williams had three hits.

Emmerton to Play in KHL
Red Wings’ center Cory Emmerton has signed a contract to play with the Sochi Leopards of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League. Emmerton split time between the Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins over the past four seasons.

Two Local Golf Teams Win U.P. Titles
A day after Houghton’s boys and girls teams won the Division One Upper Peninsula crowns, two more local teams have brought titles home. The Hancock boys won the Division Two championship yesterday. L’Anse finished third. Tristan Leaf of the Purple Hornets took top individual honors. Jeffers claimed a narrow two-stroke victory over Cedarville to win the boys’ Division Three title. Full results were not posted by the MHSAA.

K of C Fishing Tournament Tomorrow
The 13th Annual Knights of Columbus Walleye and Northern Pike Charity Fishing Tournament will be held tomorrow on Portage Lake, Torch Lake and Lac La Belle. The $45.00 entry per angler covers all categories. Teams may include two, three or four anglers per boat. No shore fishing is allowed. Cash prizes are offered.

Registration and the rules meeting will be held tonight at 7:00 pm at the Lake Linden Park Pavilion.

Breakers to Bay Run Tomorrow
The annual Breakers to Bay Five Mile Run/Walk will begin tomorrow morning at North Canal Park, and end at the KennerDome at Oskar. Walkers will depart at 8:30, and runners will start at 9:00. A free 3/4-mile kids’ race will start at the KennerDome at 10:15. Park at the KennerDome – transportation to the starting point will be provided. MTU Hockey Carnival Tomorrow
Michigan Tech will host a Spring Hockey Carnival at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena tomorrow from 4:00 until 6:00. Coach Mel Pearson says it’s a free event, designed for the whole family. Kids are encouraged to bring their sticks, and play floor hockey. Tech players will run skill sessions, and all kids will get a free poster. The locker room and other hockey facilities will be open for tours. Tomorrow also represents the final chance to purchase Tech season hockey tickets at the discounted price of 225-dollars.
