Hancock Searching for New Football Coach – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ losing streak reached seven games with a 3-1 loss to the Texas Rangers yesterday. Starter Spencer Turnbull left after the second inning with what the team is describing as “shoulder fatigue.” He gave up one run. Five relievers combined to allow just two more scores over the final seven frames. Detroit’s only run came in the eighth, when JaCoby Jones led off with a double, and eventually scored on a Miguel Cabrera sacrifice fly.

The Tigers open an interleague series against the Washington Nationals tonight. Daniel Norris will start against former Tiger Aníbal Sánchez. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

An MRI of Turnbull’s shoulder revealed no structural damage. Team officials will monitor his workouts over the next several days to see if he’ll be able to make his next scheduled start.

Several media outlets are reporting that the Tigers are finalizing a minor league deal with former Saint Louis Cardinals’ closer Trevor Rosenthal. Rosenthal saved 93 games in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He’s trying to come back after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year.

The Milwaukee Brewers salvaged one game of their interleague series against the Seattle Mariners, with a 4-2 victory yesterday. Chase Anderson tossed five scoreless innings, then left as the M’s scored twice in the sixth. He also laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that drove in the Crew’s first run. Orlando Arcia’s three-run homer provided the winning margin.

The Brewers will entertain the Pittsburgh Pirates this evening. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Chris Archer.

Hancock High School is looking for a new head football coach. Athletic Director Chris Salani confirmed that coach Ted Holmstrom resigned last Friday, effective immediately. No explanation was provided. With only a month to go before practices for the fall season begin, Salani said an “expedited” search for a replacement is underway.

The annual U.P. High School Football All-Star Game will be played tomorrow at 1:00 at the Superior Dome. This year’s teams are not divided geographically, but are simply designated “Red” and “Black.” Local members of the Red squad include Trevor Hendrickson, Brent Loukus, and Matt and Travis Ojala from Calumet… and Kellen Klein from Lake Linden-Hubbell. The Black team roster includes Josh VanDenburg from Calumet… Reese Waara from L’Anse… and Eddy Polakowski and Philip Voss from Ontonagon.
