Hancock Softball Shuts Down Gwinn – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Hancock took two games from Gwinn, by identical scores of 15-0. In the first game, Sadie Biekkola struck out five, and also had a grand slam and a double. Brooke Koskela hit a home run, and Mallory Sporalski had two doubles for the Bulldogs. In the nightcap, Diem Kilpela struck out eight. Sydnie Scholie had three hits and Sofie Freeman and Josie Hembroff each had two hits.

On today’s softball schedule, weather permitting…
• Houghton visits Westwood.
• Calumet heads to Kingsford.
• Hancock plays at L’Anse.

In baseball yesterday…
• Houghton edged Ironwood 3-2. Kyle Primeau and Eli Heathman each had two hits. Latham Salmi got the win on the mound

On the baseball schedule today, weather permitting…
• Hancock travels to Negaunee.
• Calumet journeys to Gogebic.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at L’Anse.

The Houghton track team competes at Marquette today, weather permitting.

NHL

In last night’s NHL tournament games…
• The Maple Leafs edged the Bruins 3-2. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Hurricanes overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Islanders 5-3. Carolina leads that set 2-0.
• The Golden Knights shaded the Stars 4-3. Vegas takes a 1-0 lead in that series.
• The Oilers outskated the Kings 7-4. Edmonton leads that series 1-0.

Tonight…
• The Capitals visit the Rangers. New York leads that series 1-0.
• The Panthers host the Lightning. Tampa Bay is up 1-0 in that set.
• The Jets welcome the Avalanche. Winnipeg leads that set 1-0.
• The Canucks entertain the Predators. Vancouver holds a 1-0 series lead.

NBA

In NBA tournament play last night…
• The Cavaliers shut down the Magic 96-86.
• The Knicks outscored the 76ers 104-101.
• The Nuggets edged the Lakers 101-99. Jamal Murray’s buzzer-beater completed a 20-point comeback.

Each of those winners leads their respective series 2-0.

Tonight…
• The Timberwolves host the Suns. Minnesota leads that series 1-0.
• The Bucks welcome the Pacers. Milwaukee is up 1-0 in that set.
• The Clippers welcome the Mavericks. L-A leads that series 1-0.

MLB

The Tigers jumped out to a quick lead, and cruised past the Rays 7-1 last night. Mark Canha and Parker Meadows homered. Tarik Skubal struck out nine over six shutout innings, and allowed just three hits.

The Tigers visit the Rays again tonight. Kenta Maeda will start against Ryan Pepiot. Coverage will start at 6:25 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers lost to the Pirates 4-2 last evening. Joe Ross gave up a run in the first inning, then left as Pittsburgh plated three in the sixth. Rhys Hoskins homered.

The Brewers continue that series at Pittsburgh tonight. Bailey Falter will start for the Pirates. Milwaukee has not named a starter.

Brewers starter Wade Miley was scheduled to start tonight’s game, but has been added to the injured list with an elbow problem. He’ll be examined today. Pitcher Tobias Myers has been called up from Nashville to fill in. First baseman Jake Bauers has returned from the bereavement list. Infielder Andruw Monasterio has been optioned back to the Sounds. Adding to Milwaukee’s pitching stress – Jakob Junis, who was already on the injured list, was treated at a hospital after he was struck on the neck by a baseball during batting practice yesterday.
