Hancock Softball Sweeps Houghton – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Calumet fell to Ironwood 10-8.
• L’Anse fell to Iron Mountain 11-0. Mountaineers pitcher Niko Burgoon threw a perfect game, striking out 14.

On today’s baseball schedule…
• Houghton travels to Kingsford.
• Hancock welcomes Lake Linden-Hubbell.
• Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ontonagon.

In high school softball yesterday…
• The Calumet varsity blanked Ironwood 16-0. Lena Myhren got the win in the circle, and hit two home runs, with one hitting the flagpole in center field. Chloe Coppo, Bella Coppo and Molly Erkkila each had two hits. In the nightcap, the Ironwood varsity defeated the Calumet JV team 21-11.
• Hancock swept a doubleheader against Houghton, 4-0 and 12-1. Sadie Biekkola struck out 12 and allowed just two hits for the complete game win in the opener. Ella Storm had two hits for the Bulldogs. Stella Soumis had nine strikeouts and pitched a complete game for the Gremlins. Biekkola also picked up the win in the nightcap, and had three hits. Megan Pelto, Brooke Koskela, and Sydnie Scholie each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

In softball tomorrow…
• Houghton plays at Kingsford.
• Hancock journeys to Coleman, Wisconsin

The Houghton girls soccer team will play at Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow.

The fifth annual Special Olympics Unified Basketball game that was postponed a couple of weeks ago because of a snow day will be held this afternoon at Hancock High School. Tip-off is at 1:30. The game pairs Special Olympic athletes with general education Hancock athletes. The community is invited. There is no cost to attend. 

NBA

The final NBA pre-tournament play-in games will be played tonight. The Bulls visit the Heat, and the Pelicans host the Kings.

MLB

The Tigers fell 9-7 to the Rangers yesterday. Most of the fireworks came early, with the score tied 7-7 after four innings. Texas scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to get the victory. Detroit starter Kenta Maeda left in the third inning, and was charged with six runs on eight hits.

The Tigers visit the Twins tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Joe Ryan. Coverage will start at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a series at St. Louis tonight. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Kyle Gibson.

Milwaukee has sold the contract of pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez to the Red Sox. Gutierrez had been designated for assignment earlier this week. He’s been assigned to Boston’s Triple-A Worcester Red Sox.

Running

The annual Sisu Shuffle will take place tomorrow. The informal 5k run/walk will begin at 9:00 at the UP Health System-Portage campus in Hancock. It’s a family event. Strollers and well behaved pets on leashes are welcome. There is no charge, but registration is required. Sign up online here, or arrive early tomorrow morning.
