Hancock Softball Sweeps L’Anse – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In softball yesterday…
• Hancock swept L’Anse 20-4 and 16-1. Sadie Biekkola struck out nine to earn the win in game one. Megan Pelto had four hits, including two home runs. Biekkola, Sofie Freeman and Brooke Koskela each had three hits, and Ellie Heinonen had two. Sydnie Scholie was the winning pitcher in game two, and also had three hits. Freeman and Koskela each had two hits in the nightcap.

On the softball schedule today…
• Calumet welcomes Gogebic.
• Houghton travels to Gwinn.

On today’s baseball schedule…
• Houghton plays at at Marquette
• Hancock journeys to Iron Mountain.

The Baraga boys golf team took the title at their own invitational at the L’Anse Golf Club yesterday. The Vikings finished four strokes ahead of Calumet, and five better than Houghton. Baraga’s Cage Osterman and Kailob Bianco finished in a three-way tie with Calumet’s Danny Loukus for individual honors with scores of 40. Houghton’s Marino Pisani had a 41. Calumet claimed the girls’ title, finishing a solid 31 strokes ahead of Houghton. Lily Keranen of the Copper Kings medaled with a 51, and Gracie Coppo had a 53. See full results here.

In track and field, Houghton and Calumet compete at the Negaunee Invitational today.

Slow Pitch Softball

The Copper Country Men’s Slow Pitch Softball League will hold an organizational meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Downtowner. Team captains should attend, and anyone who would like to play in the league this summer is also invited.

• The Knicks eliminated the Cavaliers 106-95. New York wins that series 4-1.
• The Heat wilted the Bucks 128-126 in overtime. Miami takes that series 4-1.

In the Western Conference…
• The Grizzlies downed the Lakers 116-99. Memphis is up 3-2 in that set.
• The Warriors outscored the Kings 123-116. Golden State leads that series 3-2.

• The Celtics visit the Hawks. Boston leads that series 3-2.

NHL

In NHL opening round playoff games yesterday…

• The Panthers edged the Bruins 4-3 in overtime. Boston leads that set 3-2.

• The Kraken edged the Avalanche 3-2. Seattle takes a 3-2 lead in that series.

• The Maple Leafs host the Lightning. Toronto leads that set 3-1.
• The Rangers visit the Devils. That series is tied 2-2.

• The Golden Knights welcome the Jets. Vegas leads that series 3-1.

MLB

The Tigers fell 6-2 to the Brewers yesterday. Detroit starter Michael Lorenzen struggled, giving up five runs through five innings. Freddy Peralta got the win for Milwaukee, allowing two runs over six innings. Joey Weimer and Victor Caratini homered for the Crew.

The Tigers open a four-game home series against the Orioles tonight. Joey Wentz will pitch against Kyle Gibson. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit shortstop Javier Báez left yesterday’s game after he was hit on the hand by a pitch. X-rays showed no significant damage, and he’s considered day-to-day.

The Brewers have today off, and host the Angels tomorrow. Wade Miley will start against Tyler Anderson. 

Before yesterday’s game, Milwaukee called reliever Tyson Miller up from Nashville. Alex Claudio, who had been brought up earlier this week, was sent back down.

NFL

The NFL Draft begins with round one tonight. The Panthers have the opening pick, which they obtained in a trade with the Bears. The Texans and Cardinals will follow. The Lions have the sixth selection, which they received from the Rams in the Matthew Stafford trade, along with their own 18th pick. The Packers have the 13th pick, moving up from their original 16th position as part of the trade with the Jets for quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Rounds two and three will take place tomorrow night, and the final four rounds will be held Saturday.
