Hancock to Explore Hockey Co-op with Jeffers – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

Could a merger be in the works between the Hancock and Jeffers hockey programs? The possibility arose at last night’s Hancock Board of Education meeting. The programs have combined before to field a junior varsity team. High School principal and Athletic Director Chris Salani proposed continuing that arrangement this year. He also suggested that a discussion be held with officials from the schools that make up the Jeffers co-op program, to see if they would be interested in combining the varsity teams. Hancock has for several years been one of the smallest schools in the state to offer a standalone hockey team. The Jeffers co-op has also included skaters from Lake Linden, Chassell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse and Ontonagon. The board approved continuing the junior varsity arrangement, and authorized Salani to approach the Jeffers schools about expanding it to the varsity level.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers won their fourth straight game last night, 5-1 over the Chicago White Sox. Starter Michael Fulmer gave up three hits over three scoreless innings. Daniel Norris got the win with two shutout innings of relief. The Sox’ only run came off José Cisnero in the seventh. Niko Goodrum went deep for the Tigers, and JaCoby Jones legged out an inside-the-park home run.

The Tigers host the Sox again tonight. Tyler Alexander will start against Gio Gonzalez. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit’s make-up doubleheader against the Saint Louis Cardinals scheduled for Thursday has been postponed. Officials cited the need for more testing, to make sure the Cards have finally gotten past the COVID-19 outbreak that caused the games to be delayed in the first place.

Tigers first baseman C.J. Cron limped off the field in the fourth inning last night, after taking a line drive off his left knee. He’ll be evaluated today. Pitcher Daniel Norris raced toward first base, grabbed the ball after it ricocheted off Cron, and made a diving tag to retire batter Danny Mendick out. Norris then tumbled across the first base line. He was checked for a concussion, but was cleared.

Detroit reliever Buck Farmer has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a groin strain. Beau Burrows has been called up to fill in.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 4-2 decision to the Minnesota Twins last evening. Adrian Houser gave up all four Minnesota runs in the third inning on a grand slam by Eddie Rosario, and took the loss. Keston Hiura homered for the Crew.

The Brewers host the Twins again tonight. Josh Lindblom will face Tyler Clippard.

Milwaukee has activated infielder Luis Urías from the COVID-19 list, and designated Logan Morrison for assignment.
