In high school hockey Friday night, Jeffers fell to Sault Ste. Marie 8-0 at the Soo Elks Showcase. The result of the Jets’ game against Big Rapids Saturday afternoon was not reported.

Hancock fell to Marquette 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.

The 19th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team edged Michigan State 5-4 in overtime Saturday night. Mark Auk’s goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation forced the extra period, and Tyler Heinonen’s second goal of the evening was the game-winner. Jamie Phillips stopped 30 shots in goal. The Huskies and Spartans play again this afternoon in East Lansing.

The eighth-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night, falling to Concordia-Wisconsin 86-77 at the Radisson Hotel Minneapolis St. Paul North Classic. The Huskies led by 11 at halftime, but the hot-shooting Golden Bears scored 55 points in the second half to claim the win. Kylie Moxley led Tech with 19 points. The Huskies cruised past Minnesota-Crookston 85-62 Friday night.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to its second-straight tie against Minnesota State University Saturday night. The 2-2 result followed a 1-1 finish Friday night.

The NMU women’s basketball team is at the Lake Superior State tournament this weekend. The Wildcats opened with a 60-55 victory over Minnesota-Duluth Saturday night. They will face Minot State this afternoon.

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost to Lawrence University 7-2 Saturday night. The Vikings held the Lions scoreless until Cam Wirick and Tom Kerr scored power play goals late in the third period. The Lions wound up with a split in their weekend series, after beating Lawrence 4-3 in overtime Friday night.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell 9-1 to Adrian College Saturday afternoon. Sierra Meiners scored the Lions’ only goal. Finlandia was outshot 47-10.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team fell 80-52 to Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday night. The Lions trailed by six at halftime, but the Warhawks exploded for 51 points in the second half to put the game away. Brandon Robinette and Brandon Robinson each scored 10 for Finlandia. The Lions lost at Wisconsin-Platteville 82-62 Friday night.

The Finlandia women’s team finished the Paul F. Knueppel Classic in Milwaukee with an 82-65 loss to Martin Luther College Saturday afternoon. The Lions trailed by just two points at halftime, but the Knights put up 49 in the second half to claim the win. Valerie Rajala led Finlandia with 18 points and nine rebounds. Kelsie Richards added 15 points. Finlandia opened the Classic with a 68-40 loss to Wisconsin-Lutheran Friday night.

Teemu Pulkkinen’s goal in overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Saint Louis Blues Saturday night. After missing the first month of the campaign while recovering from surgery, Pavel Datsyuk scored his first goal of the season. Rookie Dylan Larkin scored his eighth. Jimmy Howard stopped 30 shots. The Wings host the Boston Bruins Wednesday night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons lost a tight 97-95 decision to the Washington Wizards Saturday night. The Wizards held Andre Drummond to just eight points and 13 rebounds, and their reserves outscored the Detroit bench players 51-15. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 20 points. The Pistons visit the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow night.

NFL
The Detroit Lions host the Oakland Raiders this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Green Bay Packers visit the Minnesota Vikings in a 4:25 game.

Detroit Tigers Circle LogoThe Detroit Tigers have brought outfielder Cameron Maybin home. Detroit drafted Maybin in the first round of the 2005 draft. He made his major league debut with the Tigers two seasons later, then was traded away as part of the deal that brought Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit. He hit .267 with 10 home runs and 23 stolen bases while playing center field for the Braves last season. Atlanta will cover part of Maybin’s salary this season, and gets reliever Ian Kroll and minor league pitcher Gabe Speier in exchange.
