Hockey Wins for Gremlins, Jet and Huskies – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
– Houghton opened its season with a 4-0 victory at Escanaba.
Ty Halonen scored the eventual game-winner early in the second period. Tucker Tapani, Brandon Trudeau and Milo Shaefer added insurance markers. Jimmy Pietila needed to make just 10 saves to earn the shutout.
– Jeffers blanked Cheboygan 8-0. Noah Asiala started the Jets’ scoring spree seven minutes into the game. Jackson Rocchi had two goals and three assists. David Storm and Luke Marcotte each had a goal and an assist. Kyler Hillstrom, Brandon LaVigne and Aiden Kinnunen each scored once. Noah Nettell earned the shutout in net. The game ended 10 minutes into the third period, because of the mercy rule.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team fell 60-52 at Lake Superior State University yesterday. Carsyn Osterman led the Lions with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Lundeen added 12 points. The FinnU women play at Great Lakes Christian College today.

The Lions men’s team opened the Carthage Classic with a 122-64 loss to the host Red Men last night. Jacob Oom and Devin Moultrie each scored 14 points for the Lions, who will wrap up the classic against Aurora University this afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie at Lawrence University last night. Zach Erhardt scored early for the Lions. Marcus Gloss stopped 36 shots. Those teams play again this afternoon in Appleton

The FinnU women’s hockey squad lost 4-0 to Saint Norbert College last night. Annah Smiddy made 34 saves. The Lions host the Green Knights again this afternoon. Our coverage from the Houghton County Arena will begin at 3:55 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

WCHA

The Michigan Tech hockey team landed two third period goals to earn a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Northern Michigan University last night. Parker Saretsky netted the Huskies’ first goal in the second period. Colin Swoyer and Brian Halonen scored 70 seconds apart midway through the third period to complete the comeback. Matt Jurusik made 24 saves, including two game-savers in the closing seconds. Those teams play again tonight at 6:00 in Marquette.

GLIAC

The MTU volleyball team will face Northern Michigan University today in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Huskies are seeded second, and the Wildcats sixth. The tourney is being played in Big Rapids. Host Ferris State University will play Wayne State University in the other semifinal.

The Tech women’s basketball team fell 65-59 to Concordia-Saint Paul last night. Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 17 points. Tech will host Minnesota-Duluth tomorrow at 1:00.

The men’s basketball team hosts Minnesota-Duluth today at 2:00.

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team welcomes Saint Cloud State today, and Concordia-Saint Paul tomorrow.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the New Jersey Devils tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons started strong, and cruised to a 128-103 victory over the Atlanta Hawks last night. Detroit scored 76 points in the first half – their best first-half total in 36 years. Blake Griffin led the attack with 24 points. The Pistons visit the Milwaukee Bucks tonight.

NFL

The Detroit Lions visit Washington tomorrow for a 1:00 game. The Green Bay Packers face the 49ers in San Francisco tomorrow night. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.
