Hockey Wins for Huskies, Gremlins, ‘Dogs and Jets; Kings Tie – Sunday Sports Wrap

– Jeffers completed a sweep at the Gaylord D-III Challenge with a 7-5 victory over Grosse Ile Saturday. The Jets defeated Farmington 4-2 Friday afternoon.
– Ed Beiring’s unassisted tally with three seconds left in regulation forced overtime, as Calumet and Utca Eisenhower skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday evening. The Kings put 45 shots on goal, but couldn’t get any past Eisenhower goalie Ryan Ward until the final two minutes. On Friday, Calumet defeated Rochester United 2-1 in overtime.
– Houghton scored four times in the third period, and pulled away from Rochester United 6-1 Saturday afternoon. Dawson McKay scored two of those goals, giving him five for the weekend. His hat trick led Houghton to a 6-5 victory over Utica Eisenhower Friday night.
– Hancock blasted Escanaba 7-1 Saturday afternoon. Alex Nordstrom had a hat trick and two assists for the Bulldogs. Lance Kangas and Tanner Givens each added two goals. Cam Murray got the win in net.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Calumet Wolverines 6-5 Saturday evening. The result of Friday’s game between the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Marquette Mutineers was not reported.

MTU
The MTU hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Bowling Green with a 2-1 victory Saturday night. The Falcons drew first blood midway through the second period, but a Jake Jackson goal tied the game a few minutes later. Jake Lucchini scored the game winner in the third period. Angus Redmond stopped 22 shots to earn the win. The Huskies took a 3-1 victory over the Falcons Friday evening.

The MTU women’s basketball team never trailed on the way to a 75-59 victory over Ohio Dominican Saturday. The Huskies scored the first 10 points of the game, and never looked back. Morgan Anderson led Tech with 18 points.

Monroe
Monroe

The MTU men’s basketball team dispatched Ohio Dominican 77-56 on Saturday. Like the women’s team, the Huskies started out hot, building a 18-3 lead over the first few minutes. Kyle Monroe had 30 points and nine rebounds for Tech.

NMU
The NMU hockey team fell to Alabama-Huntsville 3-1 Saturday night, and 4-1 Friday night.

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team defeated Lake Erie 68-54 on Saturday. The men’s team earned an 82-67 victory over the Storm.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday. Alec Rounds stopped 41 shots, including 19 in the third period, as the Lions were outshot 42-15. Finlandia lost 2-0 to Wisconsin-River Falls Friday night.

The Finlandia women’s hockey squad has the weekend off.

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team had a rough shooting night, and fell to Wisconsin-Superior 79-43 Saturday. The Lions connected on only 27 percent of their shots from the floor. Brooke Turin led Finlandia with 10 points, and Hancock’s Molly Berg added nine off the bench. The Lions lost to St. Scholastica 67-58 Friday evening.

Three Lions scored more than 20, as the Finlandia men’s team defeated Wisconsin-Superior 87-80 Saturday. Terrance Fuller 23 points and nine rebounds. Marcus Geralds had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Brandon Robinson added 21 points. The Lions lost 90-79 at St. Scholastica Friday.

The Detroit Red Wings host the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon.

The Detroit Pistons will entertain the Philadelphia 76ers this evening.

The Detroit Lions entertain the Chicago Bears in a 1:00 game today. The Lions will be without center Travis Swanson, who is recovering from a concussion. Eight other players are listed as questionable. See the full injury report here. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Green Bay Packers host the Seattle Seahawks in a 4:25 game tomorrow. Linebackers Kyler Fackrell and Nick Perry have been ruled out because of injuries. See the full injury report here.
