Hockey Wins for Kings, Gremlins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
– Houghton earned an 8-0 mercy rule victory over Kingsford. Brandon Trudeau had a hat trick for the Gremlins. Dane Johnson, Milo Schaefer, Ty Halonen, Carson Stevens and Niko Rajala scored one each. Jimmy Pietila and Matthew Ryynonen combined for the shutout, as the Gremlins outshot the Flivvers 48-8.
– Marquette forced overtime with a late goal, but Calumet scored in the extra period to claim a 4-3 win. Scott Loukus scored twice for the Copper Kings, and
Lincoln Beiring and Tanner Rowe each had a goal. Alex Studebaker made 15 saves.

In girls basketball last night…
– L’Anse defeated Houghton 75-55.
– Calumet cruised past Jeffers 69-34. Marybeth Halonen led the Copper Kings with 16 points, and Ellie Djerf added 14. Myra Pennala scored 10 for the Jets.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Watersmeet 34-27.
Megan Corrigan, Melissa Wagner and Jamie Hendrickson each scored nine for the Lakes.
– Baraga stifled Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 70-15.
– Chassell lost to Ewen-Trout Creek 54-27.
– Ontonagon shut down Wakefield-Marenisco 52-15.

In high school swimming yesterday, both Houghton teams defeated Ishpeming – the girls 119-51, and the boys 112-31.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team will host Finlandia University tonight. Tip-off is at 6:00 at the SDC. 

Finlandia

Finlandia goalie Marcus Gloss has been named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week. The former Houghton High School standout made 88 saves as the Lions won two games and tied another last week.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ losing streak reached a dozen last night, as they fell 5-1 to the Jets in Winnipeg. Christoffer Ehn scored Detroit’s only goal. Eric Comrie stopped 25 of 30 shots in his first start for Detroit. In their last eight games, the Wings have been outscored 38-9.

Trevor Daley and forward Justin Abdelkader returned to the Detroit lineup last night, after missing time with injuries.

The Wings will host the Jets tomorrow. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons will entertain the Dallas Mavericks tomorrow.

NFL

The Detroit Lions will finish the season without their leading receiver. Marvin Jones hurt his ankle in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. He’s been placed on injured reserve.
