The Finlandia University men’s soccer team plays at North Central University in Minneapolis this afternoon.

MLB

The Minnesota Twins clinched the American League Central Division title last night with a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers got just two hits. Daniel Norris pitched three scoreless innings. Drew VerHagen also tossed three shutout frames, but allowed two runs in the seventh, and left as the Twins scored three more in the eighth.

The Tigers host the Twins again this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will start for Detroit. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers clinched at least a wild card playoff berth with a 9-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds last night. The Crew wasted no time, scoring six runs in the first inning. Ryan Braun’s grand slam was the big blow. Jordan Lyles gave up two runs over five innings to get the win.

The Brewers conclude that series in Cincinnati this afternoon. Chase Anderson will start against Luis Castillo.

The Cardinals lost, and the Nationals won. That leaves Milwaukee 1.5 games behind Saint Louis in the National League Central Division. The Brewers have four more games to play, and the Cards have three. Washington holds a one-game lead in the fight for home-field advantage in the wild card playoff game.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a preseason contest last night. Mike Green and prospect Ryan Kuffner scored for Detroit. Jonathan Bernier made 28 saves, and took the loss in net.

Tonight is the big night, as the Wings face the Saint Louis Blues at the Calumet Colosseum in the Kraft Hockeyville 2019 contest. We’ll broadcast the game on KBear 102.3, with an extended pregame show starting at 6:00.

Who’ll be making the trip with the Wings? The Detroit Free Press and Detroit News both published articles confirming that Detroit could put many regular-season players on the ice. That includes Dylan Larkin, who skated at MacInnes Arena just five years ago, when he played for the University of Michigan. Coach Jeff Blashill grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and played at the Colosseum and many of the U.P.’s other rinks in youth hockey. Calvin Pickard is scheduled to start in goal for Detroit. The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch indicated that the Blues will bring a young line-up. Former Michigan Tech star Mitch Reinke, who had recently been sent down by Saint Louis, has been brought back up, and is on the roster for the trip.
